But if I may... I would recommend the YN560-III instead. It comes with a build-in receiver. Then get two RF-603 and a N2 cable.

This will give you the following options:

1 - use one RF-603 to operate your flash independent of camera shutter
2 - plug one RF-603 in your cameras hotshoe, your camera will trigger flash remote
3 - insert cable in camera and connect to RF-603 in hotshoe. Use second RF-603 to remote control camera/flash

I dont really want to use the flash as a flash for the camera. Im into the light painting and so the idea was i could set the camera up, set up the flash on another tripod, set the camera going and then use the flash for quick bright bursts to create the shadows i want.... so the flash is completely seperate from the camera and i just wanted a remote for the flash gun. which is why i thought my existing remote might work (i had a glimmer of hope).

If i could get a torch with a remote, i would use that for example!! i hope this makes things a little clearer on what im after

Hmmm... how about one of those cheap remote controlled doorbells, a bit of fiddling about and - voila! Remote controlled torch!
