Hi,
Been thinking about my first DSLR. Went into a well known camera shop in York yesterday. I've been looking at the Canon 500d or Nikon d5000. When I went into said shop I was greated by a pushy rep. I said it was my first SLR and could I have a look at the 500d first. He gave me it and said have a go. I might be wrong but having said it was my first camera, he could have quite easily explained the main features and how they worked !!
So... is there any good camera shops in York / Leeds / Doncaster / Wakefield area that give you great advice on features of different cameras and actually spend time with their customers.
Thanks

How was he pushy yet not tell you about the camera?

Also, if you go in to a shop and ask for a specific camera then most salesmen would assume that you had researched it already, otherwise, why ask for that one?

I got great help from a guy in Jessops at Leeds, Headrow. Unfortunetly I can't remember his name.

dk,

Don't know which one you went in as there are two- York camera mart and Jessops, both within 2 minutes of each other walking. I like YCM as they have a good selection of lenses for trial. I've not had a problem there. Jessops seems to specialize a bit more in tourist photographers and things that they might want, plus a few other nice bits and bobs. Never had a problem there, though they do get busy on weekends. Sounds like you were there considering YCM isn't open on Sundays.

There is also a jessops in Monk's Cross shopping center. It is a bigger store and not as busy, so service is a bit better. Selection is still low though.

There is Beverley Camera mart in beverley, though that is over here and you're looking the other side or York. There is also a Jacobs in Hull, but again not the direction you're asking about.

Thanks
Rick

Thanks Rick. I'm going to have a look at the Monks Cross one as its a bigger store. Hope they have more time for customers.

I'm actually in Selby so Beverley isn't too far away. Do they sell new cameras ?

@HarveyNikon I've researched the spec and everything but not how to use them.

Dales Photographic - upstairs in Merrion Centre, Leeds
and
Jacobs in city centre, Leeds (nr Boots)

Both would give good advice and have a reasonable selection of gear.

Was it Fred?

Are the prices any good in York Camera Mart? Having just flogged my d90 I'm now after a 550d after deciding I can't live without a DSLR.

I might have to pop in one lunchtime if so. I'm getting bored of wandering into camera shops and finding they've got nothing in stock.

When I was looking at the Canon 60d a few weeks ago I found York Camera Mart's prices to be the same as Jessops for that particular body - which was £100 more expensive than Kerso (who also included a memory card). Horses for courses really - they have a shop to pay for!

With regards to Jessops - I went to the Monks Cross branch and found the salesman to be great, very friendly and not pushy at all, though in fairness from the OP's post I wouldn't describe his experience as pushy. Had I gone in and the sales guy tried to throw facts and figures at me to get a sale that would be pushy. Instead as I hadn't made my mind up about the Canon or a Nikon the guy simply got both out if the cabinet and followed me round with which ever I wasn't holding so I could have a good play with each!

Shame they didn't get the sale, but unfortunately they don't price match outside 10 miles from their store and certainly won't match online retailers. £100 price difference was just too much.

Regards

Neil

dk,

Yes, they have the normal ranges of cameras for nikon. I don't know canon so you'd be better calling. It is a tiny shop, so I wouldn't make it a destination. They do have a lot of random used bits though. Honestly, you'd probably be better going to YCM or another of the listed above. Beverley is close for me (2 miles) and we walk past every other saturday when we go to the market.

YCM prices are as stated above. However, don't just go by the list. If you ask how much they might do you a discount. I asked about a 055PRO with matching head and they knocked about 20% off the list without asking. As said, they do have a store to run, so I don't expect them to beat online prices. Thus, I'd probably buy it online anyway.

Thanks
Rick

If the price is fairly close I would suggest buying from a local shop. They provide good advice and need support to stay open. Thy may come in handy for future purchases.

Dale photographic in Leeds have been pretty helpful when I have visited. Beverley Camera Mart - I've visited this once....my work is literally metres from it! You'd think I'd be there every lunch time! But there wasn't a huge range of cameras, it's a small shop which you can spin around on the spot and you've seen it all, also the prices I found quite high.

Unfortunately my experience of Dale s in Leeds was not a pleasant one at all. I'm not going into details but it did end up with me having to write a complaint to the manager who apologised profusely, but the damage had been done. I shall never shop there again. Not only that they're very expensive too. This was my personal experience that I wanted to relate.

I had some good advice from Jessops Sheffield on the phone, but a visit to a Jessops store was disappointing (lack of any real interest in letting me try bodies or lenses they would have to get in specially).
I've purchased from Dales but the prices I paid, whilst slightly higher than other stores for a couple of accessories were competitive for a lens & body. It was worth not having to drive all over Yorkshire to get what i wanted or waiting for it to be send thru the mail - everything was in stock. They weren't pushy and I found them ok and willing to answer any questions/let me handle the goods for as long as I wanted- I'd shop there again (depending on prices), but I guess any shop can get good or bad reviews.

buy whatever you can afford. ideally canon / nikon / pentax . read the manual and stick around in TP . none of the reps will teach you everything and most of them might give you bad advice + they are there to sell stuff you don't need.

I've nothing but praise for Dale Photographic. Have bought several items, and even had help assessing whether something was faulty that I'd not even bought from them - without any promises to buy anything further.

As with all things, there will be different takes depending on circumstance, but I would recommend Dale Photographic very highly indeed.
