I've been using my 7D for about a year now and still have years of use I could get from the camera, I really like for sports. I have a lot of glass so a brand change is not coming but I do want to go wide very wide. Been looking at 10-22, 14mm prime and 8-15 fish-eye. I stated to think, however, I could double my lens line up by getting a 5D MkII. This would be in addition too the 7D. Or should I sell the 7D and look at a 1DMkIV w/1.3 Crop factor? If I went for the 1D at about the same cost as the 7D and 5D2 together I would still only have one body but may simplify things. The 5D2 ticks all the boxes combined with the 7D I would have all the bases covered. DO you guys have any thoughts on the dilemma?

how many lenses have you got with EFS mounts ? if theres an appreciable number then that might be a problem as they wont go on either the 5Dmk2 or the 1D series

that aside i've often seen the 7D / 5D2 combination sugggested as a budget alternative to the ultimate pro solution of rocking a 1D and 1DS
 
I have both the 7D and 5DII and I think the combination works well. I don't use my lenses as you are suggesting, using each with both cameras. I tend to only use the 7D with a long lens for wildlife, either my 400mm or a rented 500mm with 1.4x converter and occasionally a 70-200. I use the 5DII for general photography; landscapes, people and for macro. My purchase of the 5DII was very spur of the moment at Focus (I'd been saving for a 500mm f/4) but I love the detail and tonal quality of the 5DII and don't regret buying it at all.
 
The 10-22mm is a pretty decent lens on the 7d.

The 10mm end of course is roughly equal to a 17mm on the 5D (making the guess that you have a 17mm of course).

Depending on how many lenses you have, I would have expected you to end up like OneTen above. Deciding whether you are taking wild-life, or wide landscape and selecting the camera/lens combination to go around that.
Personally, I like wildlife (birds), and never have enough reach, so wouldn't ever choose anything than a crop camera.

With sport, the crop could be compensated somewhat with a longer lens (as your subject is a little larger).

Are you at the stage where you need a backup camera?
Are you going to be able to handle two cameras at one time? (I find at the moment, moving with 1 camera and all my lenses difficult)
 
We have 7D and 5D2. The only two lenses that go on the 7D are the 15-85 (Ms arad85s walkabout) and 70-200 and sometimes 70-200+1.4TC for wildlife. The 5D2 gets used for everything else (main lenses being 17-40, 24-105 or 100mm L macro).
 
I have the poor man's version - 5D classic and 50D. I do use some of my lenses on both bodies. I find the 100mm IS Macro useful as it becomes a mid range telephoto on the crop. I have just bought a 300mm and although have only used it so far on the crop I will have the ability to use it as a 300, a 480 or over 600 with the TC. I do only use my 24-105 on the 5D however if I get the 17-40 which I would like at some point, the 24-105 on the 50D could be a good combo too.

If you want to go wide, then a 1D is not the way to do it.
 
Thanks everyone for your in put. as suggested if I went the 5D2 route I envisage I would also have the long lenses on the 7D and short lenses on the 5D2 and have two different sets of sets of core gear for different kinds of imaging.

I think that's the best way. 5D2 probably the main camera for IQ reasons and the wide stuff, then the 7D for speed and reach, with a big overlap in the middle.
