You have £1000 to spend on a lens for a full frame Camera (D750) - What do you get?

So, I'm looking at getting the D750 and instead of getting the kit lens it normally comes with I'm thinking - Body only and getting a better lens to do the camera some justice - So for £1000 - What do you get?

Ideally it would be nice to have an all-round lens, sports, weddings, music, landscape etc - whilst I probably know there isn't a lens to suit all categories - there must be something middle of the road that will do the majority??

Honestly if you're after a 1 lens solution the 24-120 f4 is as close as you'll get but you will find it won't be fast enough or long enough for every situation. It's a fine lens though, I used mine a lot before I went to primes.

There's not really one lens that could do all of them. I would say a nikon 24-70 f2.8 would cover weddings, music and landscapes, and then get another lens for sports and wildlife. A nikon vr1, sigma or tamron 70-200 f2.8 could be ideal for sports and can be used for wildlife too. It would need your budget increasing slightly to get those two lenses unless you went with sigma or tamron. I'm talking second hand prices too.

And I would like a car that will win me Nascar and also return 100mpg when I pootle to the shops and ideally it would be small enough to park in a motorcycle parking spot. Would be nice if it could turn into a submarine too so I don't have to bother with the pesky Eurostar...

The more you ask a lens to do the more of a compromise it will be so you are better off figuring out exactly what you want and going from there.

like i said in my original post Ned - i understand that there won't be a lens that will do all of the above however if people could recommend something that will be a good all round lens - that would be great
 
Weeeelll...

A 50mm prime could cover most situations, I really like mine.

My most used lens on my D700 when I had one was a 70-300VR, which I used for pretty much everything.

Other people prefer wider angles in which case a 28-70 f/2.8 or similar zoom is useful, the Tamron version is cheap as chips and as good as the Nikon version which is silly money (but it isn't 'weather resistant').

I use the NIkon 28-300 on my D610 and that covers pretty much most things but compromises on some extra distortion and slow aperture.

Really, like I said, it depends.

Gary's suggestion is a good one, the latest generation of Tamron and Sigma 70-200's are surprisingly close to the much more expensive Nikon equivalents. The Nikon 70-200 F4 VR is worth a look too, there is one for sale in the classifieds.

Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART and Nikon 70-300mm VR? The 35 can do the vast majority of things listed (and extremely well) and the 70-300 is a surprisingly nice option when you need a bit of reach.
 
get the Tamron 150 600mm and just concentrate of birds and nature plus a load of old MF Nikkors used from Ebay, a 50, 20 and 35 for any other stuff.............. the 150mm end of the Tamron will be good for all sorts
