Yes
For the last 4 days I've driven passed a car for sale on the side of the road, today I turned around and went to take some photos of it for a friend.

Its an old vauxhall and he loves his old cars!

Anyway, park up next to it, start taking a couple of photos. Go around to the front, take one shot, hear a noise behind me and turn round.

Face to face with the barrel of the owners shotgun!

He asked what I was doing and explained, he lowered it, then started having a go about me taking photos. I pointed out that I wasn't doing anything wrong because they were on public land. He said he owned it, until I pointed out that there were 2 road signs on his land in that case.

Anyway, we spend the next 20 mins talking and he shows me around his land. It was an old garden centre, now each greenhouse is full of stuff. In one trailer he had dolls, radios and even a sold brass deep sea diving helmet, in another a massive telescope and loads of junk.

Typical pikey though, tried selling me a mk3 xr3i and talking a load of ****** but not a bad guy once I'd calmed him down :D Gift of the gab me :D

I'd definitely face a security guard over a shotgun :D

Report it to the Police - now!

I gave him a warning for using it in the manner he did. He lives alone, next to motorway, no family or neighbours near by and had a load of stuff stolen from his yard last month while he was away.

We're not allowed to carry them. Sadly. Too many moving parts
Back on topic, did he have any old bakelite valve radios? :)

lol. Had too google them :p He did seem to have several old radios, of various types.

Probably sitting on a gold mine, if only he had an ebay account :)
Some people will buy anything! Ahem.

If I had to guesstimate from what I saw, £60-90k easily. Lots of antique dolls, vinyls, furniture etc. He's got a cast iron old fashion fireplace and stove that would fetch £5k online!

He did say he was dyslexic and uneducated, now just trades in random stuff. Think he's just an old lonely guy but some of his sales pitches! I am really interested in the telescope he had, but of course, its worth more as it used to belong to Patrick Moore :p

Maybe you should offer your services as a trading partner :) First thing to sell would be the shotgun!

Yes, report it, if he has a shotgun certificate he shouldn't have one. If he threatens you for openly taking photographs what might he do to an unannounced innocent visitor to his premises?

The possible consequences of his behaviour are extremely serious.

Please don't even think about not reporting this to the police.

Report this incident now. As a shooter of both cameras and guns there is no way this man should be in possession of a shotgun. Threatening you with it is an offence, regardless of the land ownership.

Maybe he is another Tony Martin, been burgled so many times that the police don't want to know, so he has started carrying a shotgun. It is definately unacceptable for him to be doing that and if he did it to me I would have been petrified, but maybe he has been driven to defending his home with a shotgun like Tony Martin was? Since you have now made his acquaintance maybe you should get to know him better and you might find out why he has a shotgun at his side or even help him sell his stuff for a fair price? Just something to consider.

...or even help him sell his stuff for a fair price? Just something to consider.

If he sells it there's nothing left to nick, less need for the shotty. I'd report it personally, yes he could end up blowing someone's head off, but if he's an old boy it could just as easily happen that someone takes it off him (after pointing at them) and blows his head off with it.

Maybe he is another Tony Martin

Tony Martin was convicted of murder.

His conviction was reduced on appeal to manslaughter, because he was shown to be suffering paranoid personality disorder and was therefore of diminished responsibility for his actions.

He didn't have a firearms certificate for the gun he used to kill Barras, since it had been revoked for shooting somebody else in 1994.

If the person that the OP met is in the same state of mind as Tony Martin, he shouldn't hold a firearms certificate.

If he doesn't hold a firearms certificate, the gun he presented to the OP is illegally held.

Gee - caveat emptor. Would you buy a used car from this guy? Serious psycho.

This man deserves to have his shotgun certificate (if he has one) withdrawn immediately and his guns(s) confiscated. Don't mess about, report it to the police immediately. Potentially a dangerous man! If he doesn't have a shotgun certificate he faces a minimum sentence of 5 years in jail.

I am a shooting man and abhor anyone pointing a gun at a living person.

Certificate or not it's still a statutory offence under the Firearms Act 1982 carrying a minimum 5 year mandatory sentence.

Had a quiet word with one of the policemen I know "off the record" and he knows exactly who I was speaking about. The guy had an estimated £45k of stuff stolen from his yard, with a further £40k that he claimed but couldn't prove. He's going to look in to it and have a word with him.

he should get an insurance policy.

And now this guy knows who shopped him to the police ........ He may now come looking for you ;)

I appreciate what you were trying to do....

But I think you are very wrong

What happens if, in the near future, this guy goes totally mad and kills a number of people.

FWIW i believe you should have made a formal complaint and got this nutter locked up

While I can sympathise with the guy it''s not an excuse and the police certainly shouldn't look at it that way, the gun should be removed immediately and any licence he has pulled.

For everyone going a little OTT on the 'shop to the cops' comments, another update:

My policeman friend popped in today to speak to him, to find that the old guy had already taken my advice on not using it like that by going a little OTT and using an industrial clamp on them. He apologised to the police officer and handed the no longer functioning gun over. Turns out he didn't even have any shells for it.

As I said, he may of been a dodgy dealer, but at no point did I feel he was actually the sort of person to use it. I've spent my life growing up around shotgun users where I used to live, you can tell the difference between those who do it genuinely and those that do it for the lols!

Been shooting for over 50 years and that's the biggest load of lolbox I've ever seen anyone type :(

and where I live, there is NO difference between those who do it genuinely JUST for the lol's

Just because he has had stuff nicked, that's no reason to act lick a complete clown. He had a car for sale and you were looking at it and his response is to come up behind you with a shotgun?

You say it was non-functioning, so that's double stupid. How is the person he pulls it on going to know that? I'm surprised this guy has survived as long as he has with that kind of thinking.

When threads dont go the way the OP expected Part XVXIII.......

So what - this is NOT the wild west! Report him properly.

Agreed. Firearms are illegal without the proper licencing to go with them and pointing it directly at someone shows incompentance in being able to handle one :nono:

The 'report it to the police' comments weren't even slightly OTT. You have no idea whether or not the gun was loaded at the time - he may have well disposed of any cartridges he had in the interim. Owning a firearm comes with some serious responsibilities and one of the basic safety rules is that you NEVER point a gun whether loaded or not at another person. There's nothing even vaguely 'lol' about the misuse of a firearm.

I argree.
He may or may not have had shells for it (I'm not convinced) but the person who steals it may well have them hanging about even if he didn't.
Then theres the possibility he's given plod a dud one and still has the real one tucked away.

The other point I'll make is this:

What kind of police force would allow an "unofficial" quiet word with a suspected threating/illegal use of a firearm these days? The media would have a field day with them if a murder occurred and it was discovered that a police officer had had a "quiet word" with him. And If he produced a bent up shotgun with the words "I'll never do it again officer" Why was he not immediately arrested and charged? He had admitted the offence and produced the weapon with which he committed it.

Actually I can see the sense in a certain amount community policing in this matter.

If the guy was genuinely just waving a blunt stick about then a quite rap over the knuckles by the local bobby probably isn't too bad a way of dealing with things. If he gets charged then there is no alternative available to the sentencing authority but a 5 year term in prison.

There has been enough critiscism of the plod for no showing sense in firearms cases in the recent past, so maybe this is an example of where it has worked.

I still stand by the concept that there is no alternative to reporting it to the police in the first place though.
