Your definition of street photography?

This pic originally was not a favourite, but looking back at it I have realised it has in my definition what a street shot should be? In reflection I was part of the action too, I was in the crowd clearly taking photos of the people around me, I was not in the back ground with a good lens taking shots. My newly found definition of street photography is to be part of the crowd, to be seen or not to be noticed, whatever really! Its our right to take pics in public places (? CCTV?) and if some-one objects, simples... delete the pic for them, its only a pic, plenty more where they came from.

I think you have to be close or at least project a feeling in the photo that you as the photographer are part of the scene, if not actually pictured in it.
That for me is street, anything else is a shot of street, unfortunately its not as conveniently easy or risk free as peeps would like it to be, especially in 2009.
There are plenty of great shots of the street or in the street, I just think to shooting "street" is a little different.

Not everyone is as convinced about our rights as camera owners, especially in the street, so certain are they that, cause a scene now and ask questions later seem to be the standard rules of engagement.

Your quite right, not to throw caution to the wind, especially when taking pics of total strangers. I hope my discression will stop me getting myself into to much trouble and also hope to difuse any situations? good luck with your street shots.
