Hi

I went to check our daughters PC this morning (we keep a check on what she is up to on the net with friends etc etc,) she had left you tube open and she was watching part 6 of Sweeny todd. Now this has an 18 rating and we do not allow her to watch films above her age range (she is 12) so is there a way I can block any unsavoury content for her to see??

Thanks

Report it to youtube, the video should be rated as mature content.

Although that doesnt stop her signing in with a Google/Youtube account with a false DOB.

Otherwise short of blocking Youtube..

Have you talked to her about it? Presumably she knows you check her computer so would be expecting some telling off?

She will be talked too that is for sure, she is normally pretty good but this is why we keep a check every now and then, 3-4 times a week normally. to be fair its normally her face book we check more so.

Just tried to delve deeper, my daughter does not have an account on youtube, she just opened google and serched for sweeny todd and up it came, so i do not know how i can stop her looking at adult content on there.

Whats the point of having a youtube account if you can just google it and get it.

I cannot even set parent controles on her lap top as we set it up as her pc when we got it for her not thinking about parent controles.

Next question, can I change the lap top so it is not set up in her name. that way I can set parent controles???

Only let your daughter use the PC within your line of sight, that would be the only sure way of making sure she is not accessing stuff she should not on the PC

Trouble is 90%of her usage is facebook with her school mates and web camming with her mates with skype, so she is in her room, so this is not really an option.

You really need to make it an option, my kids 14 and 12 aren't allowed computers in their bedrooms, there's an iMac downstairs and they have net books but not upstairs, they can be in a room by themselves but not in a bedroom, there's a lot of sick stuff out there

There's software you can install on your pc which allows you to remotely log in to another pc on the network , I think it's called log me in but you'd need to check.

Failing that you should be able to block adult content from within the router

Vnc is a good piece of software, as it allows to see what she is looking at without having to be in the same room as her, it also allow you to take over the mouse and close programs if the need arises :)

You could set up another user account on her computer with full administrator privileges. Then change hers to a limited user. How limited is up to you. You can then install parental controll software.

Andy that sounds exactly like how I would like to do it, how do I set up another user with full admin privilages???

I'm assuming she has a Windows based computer (different versions may vary.)
Got to the Controll Panel - User Accounts.
There will be an option on there for creating a new account. On Windows Vista it's under Manage Accounts.
Create your new account with admin priviladges and set a password.
You may need to log in to your own account before limiting hers and setting the parental controlls.
I've not used it myself but from a quick look you can limit the times she can use the computer, mature content internet filter, block file downloads and block specific programs from running.
Even if she has a password for her account you will still be able to access all her files from your admin account.

You have the potential for some serious issues in there, not saying you will but there is certainly the potential. A wise move suggested above is to have the laptop used in a 'public' area of the house.

Thanks for all the above.
We will create a new account for her and set the parent controls.
She is a sensible girl and to be fair she has had a pc for about 5 years without any problems at all. like said we keep a close eye on what she is doing on there with her mates etc, we aer happy for her to do all of that just set the bloomin laptop up wrong when we got it for her for xmas, never gave it a thought about youtube.

I am not going to block youtube from her as there is alot of stuff on there that she and her mates look at, music vids song words etc etc.
Thanks again for all your help

Until my kids hit 16 all PC use was in "public areas" of the house BUT you should always remember however safe you try to keep them there will always be a friends home that isn't so "net aware"

(never mind mobile access to youtube etc)

As I said earlier we keep a close eye on what she looks at, she has always had the threat of laptop or pc taken away if we find she has been up to no good.
Like said if she is away from our house then we can not see what she is looking at agreed, but thats a chance everyone can take.
Here in Guersney her friends all live away from where we live so she very rarely goes round to their houses.

I asked her tonight (she has been away for the weekend) why she was looking at sweeny todd on you tube, she said they are doing it as a play at school. this checks out as she told the wife two weeks ago, she was doing research, just so happens she got the "rated 18" version lol.

She is a good kid and she knows we check on her, and to be honest 99% of the stuff she looks at is harmless, she never invites a friend to facebook unless we see it, her facebook is linked to our email so we see all invites and tags. She does not even have a mobile phone, no point where we live, she has a Ipod touch but that is locked down with a pass code that we have not her, so try very hard to keep her safe.

Thanks again for all the advice. be setting her laptop in about an hour or so.

Hey, you can't check all the boxes, the important thing is that you care and obviously love her ... that's 99% in this day and age.

I do that Gramps, To be honest, the way I look at it is this, if she is in her room talking on skype to her friends and on face book with her friends, laughing and joking, me and the wife can keep a check, if she where out everynight hanging round street corners we would never know what she was getting up too, till it was probably too late.

Dreading the years ahead,
