Spray and pray, people!

From the post..."P is for pathetic. Would you want your caterer to forget how to cook chicken and just microwave it? Do you want your officiant to forget your names and just call you “him” and “her”? Do you want your accountant to spray and pray? Your doctor? Your mechanic? Your lawn care guy? Why on God’s great green earth would you want your wedding day covered by someone who has forgotten how to use their camera? WHY set that low of a bar for those getting into the industry? Weddings aren’t school. You’ve got one shot to get it right or screw it royally. Oh! Don’t worry. Most of your first weddings will be for friends and family he says. The perfect people to screw over with bad photos. If you’re having to spray and pray then maybe, just maybe, you need to get your business started on a different kind of job. Like portraits. Portraits are a great place to start. Learn on jobs you can redo if you need to. Don’t screw with someone’s wedding day by not knowing what you’re doing. Period."

Last time i checked there wasn't a "p" mode on my spanners, come to think of it neither my lawn mower!?
Typical self righteous American [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER].
I totally understand however and i am myself dead against the weekend warriors, but just come out and say it. We don't need parallels.

He would be talking sense if the whole thing wasn't a self loving rant that is barely comprehensible. There may be some good points in there but he makes them rather hard to find!

I think we're reading a different post.

Nope, same self righteous vain post lol
Basically he is saying, "well check me out i shoot manual"
He's not the only one, except others have more grace than to shout about it lol
If its really burning a hole in his soul then perhaps he could contact the major manufacturers of cameras and ask them nicely to remove a feature they worked hard at to provide their customers.
Maybe then his world would be a better and with a little less p mode turmoil.
Oh and while where at it i wonder how many photographers in war zones would agree with him?

Have you missed the whole point of the post, perhaps?

Everything in photography seems to be about bloody weddings these days!

was the guy he was talking about crash taylor? :D

he had some points but I agree with the others, he did kind of become very self indulgent about the whole thing. The blog post and video could have been about a tenth of the length to make his point without all the gubbins that made me want to punch myself in the face

Joe, did you video punching yourself in the face?

Too many people get hung up on the technicalities and forget about the bigger picture, moments.
Im not saying for one minute this zach guy isn't any good and as a well oiled professional should be able to shoot manually without thinking. Just don't know why he is shouting about the obvious?

I have had two weddings and not ever looked at the photos since the intial viewing. There are in a lot of cases not important as most people think.

To some they are everything, to others they mean nothing. Obviously you fall into the second category. But even for the ones that do enjoy the odd flick through the album i would say its a really low percent if any that would think "Damm, if our photographer had his camera set on m mode these would be so much better" most won't know or even care what settings were used so long as they like what's been delivered then its all cool.
Shouting about "spray and pray" won't change things and other than a chest expanding exercise is just making this zach guy look like a twunt

It always amuses me when an 'expert' bemoans advice from others about how to shoot 'properly' and then rants about how you should shoot because their way is wrong. They are normally the ones who have other 'rants' on their self promotional blogs about how it's not about the camera as the photographer is the important part of the equation.

Zack Arias is, possibly, the most ironically named individual in the industry IMO!

Yes but it's ZA he is god lol

Sorry, got bored a third of the way in........he doesn't like who/what precisely.
These bloggers really need to learn to get to the point.

He makes a valid point. Knowing the guy personally, I can say hand on heart he is a far from a douchebag and has helped me out A LOT!

For a guy who has had the most viewed post on Kelby's blog, the 2 most successful Creative lives etc he is not exactly under the radar.

Just to clarify, i didn't call him a douchebag, i said i would be saying douchebag next not calling anyone that! Honestly read the posts properly.
i have better words in my arsenal than that so don't get exited.
And yes he has slipped under MY radar, never heard of the bloke before now. or the two things you mentioned at the end of your posts?
Anyway. Lets just say that blowing off steam in a holier than thou manner won't get zach many thumbs up.

Jeez, getting this wound up by a blogger who's written a bit vitriol to vent his spleen.... Dean has posted a valid link (and quote) that is of interest, if only to understand how 'celebrity' photographic bloggers get footfall onto their respective websites. No one has died....

You could compare it to djs,
Saying that if your not using vinyl and two turntables and instead using a laptop with beat matching or cdjs then your just going through the motions, and while beatmatching and turntablism is an important skill someone using a laptop could still tear the roof off a club given the right choice of music for the right crowd.
Its not always about settings

Don't know either of them, so it hardly matters what they say, could be anybody with an internet connection as far as I'm concerned.
There are photographers famous the World over, known by peeps outside as well as inside photography, and there are photographers famous only in the minds of the peeps that follow them/interested in their particular niche/know them personally.
You just can't assume everyone cares, in fact those that don't care ought not to post in the damn thread....like me.

My point is not that I don't care though, so maybe I can.....:D

Put your toys back in the pram. I didn't quote you, I used the same word, it was actually tongue in cheek but hey ho. I was replying to the things a few were saying and the things were in reference to a few posts. I wasn't being holier than thou, just I find a disturbing trend to slag off professionals seeping into this forum and I don't like it.

Are you zach?
If so then yea, the holier thou comment? it was directed at you.
If your not him then why are you not reading my posts correctly?

I knew it'd wind 'em up though, mate.

Maggot on hook, cast, sink the line and wait....

Because I have a 3 week old baby and have had about 4 hours sleep in the last few days. I apologise for not reading it correctly. Just a tired and very grumpy man at the moment.

My point is still valid though, I do feel a Pop at some photographers not here to defend theirself is a bit low (not aimed at you).

As for the post, I agree. Anyone saying to stick a camera in P mode and shoot weddings is joking! What if the light meter doesn't play ball. Too many people don't know how to shoot manual and have no idea what to do if it all goes wrong in Auto mode.

Using your DJ analogy. Most modern systems have beat matching systems in them, but sometimes they don't get it right. You need to know how to match beats yourself so that if the system you use fails, you can over ride it and keep the party going.

Autopilot is amazing, but I am still happier flying knowing there is a pilot there that knows how to land the plane if the system messes up.

I'm guessing Zach's post makes lots more sense if you're aware of the whole story.:geek:

I'm not up for a rehash of the entire thing, but Zach makes some great points - and it's not about 'doing it my way'. It's more about curtailing someone who doesn't mind doing a massive damage to the industry in order to sell their own products. :annoyed:

Just like on here, no-one wants to stop newcomers, but it's wrong to encourage people with no skills or knowledge to buy the snake oil and ignore the 'old-timers' who'll insist you ought to know what you're doing before you ruin someone's wedding photo's.

Re: The System - if anyone really wants an insight, you should beg steal or borrow kit to go out and shoot a wedding, but to be really successful you'll want a Showit website - a bargain at $1500 compared to the free templates out there.

I know of a few photographers taken in by all this rockstar bull...t, and I have people in the industry I admire as photographers - but when people can't see the 'wow you're a great guy, you need to buy one of these from me and we could make you brilliant', I find that really worrying in an adult.

ps - anyone want to buy a Lightsphere - only had light use;)

.

so can the light meter only go wrong in p mode then ?

I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but warning point one for me is why do the vid in black and white - trying to be arty? No idea and who in their daily lives quote Solomon regularly.. okay not my thing and the best of luck to him, he does come across as a nice enough chap even if he does suffer from opinions.

The second is at a point he talks about shooting only four weddings (maybe he could do a funeral too ;)), but shooting as he wants to - I get that to a point, but surly its about the client, not the ego of the photographer - unless he has a specific style that the client has deliberately sought out.

Does seem full of himself, but then thats a blogger for you I guess.

I couldn't read the actual post itself, it was all over the place, but if the point of it was to say I'm better than you then thats just sad and patronising.

Shooting in M because it is M is pointless - its like learning the knowledge to drive across London - sure, if you're a taxi driver it makes sense, but for the rest of us satnav will do.
