Hi,

I am a relative newby and have a canon 400D. I am looking for a zoom lens for taking nature and motorsports (minimoto racing).

Having read through various threads what I would really like is a second hand canon 70-200 f4 non IS lens. However, I haven't got that much money at the moment (£150 max).

However, I have come across a Sigma 75-300mm DL f5.6. Would this lens fit my 400D and what do people think about it?

thanks in anticipation,

malc

For the sort of money your able to spend at the moment you can get a brand new Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro. It's a very nice lens for the price but if you decide to get one make sure it's the APO version and not just the DG;)

thanks for the quick response! What's the difference between an APO and DG?

The Apo version is made using special low-dispersion (SLD) glass and is designed to minimize color aberration. In real terms it's a slightly better lens(y)

I don't mean to sound cheeky but I've got a Canon 100-300 f4.5-5.6 USM for sale at the moment. PM me if you're interested?

If you're getting a 7*-300, please don't get a 75-300. The Sigma 70-300 is better and around the same price.

the minimoto racing is outdoors

Smiffo,

I think your own choice of the 70-200f/4 is the right one. The 75-300?....not for what you want. I have seen some reasonable shots from it but they were all more specialised shots. I had this lens for a while but gave up in total frustration...don't waste your money...please.

I always think that having no lens is better than having the wrong lens....get a paper round and save up for the 70-200 (I can't comment on the other options suggested though).

An L lens is always going to be much better - but the guy wants something now and appears to be skint. I shot sports for 18 months with this lens and a 300D. With a 4 shot buffer you're always going to be anticipating, but it did alright for me until I upgraded to the 70-200 F4.

A second hand 70-200 F4 non IS is about £300-320 second hand? i.e. that's a long time on paper round money.

Sometimes I still miss that little extra reach. These were all taken with the non-usm lens (awfully slow to focus - don't get that one)

Hi,
I recently got the Canon 70-200F4 and its a fantastic bit of kit! New around £350 but you don't seem to see many second hand ones.........! If you can't stretch the budget at the moment try one of the cheaper alternatives above, you can always sell it on later.

fantastic build and fast-silent operation. Just wish I could afford the f/2 IS version.....you always want what you can't afford.

don't think the birds like it, never managed to get any shots of birds coming at me :(

Can I ask where you got it for £330 brand new?

Crikey. How do you manage to stay on that?

Michael.

As Biker28 says, use the knees to keep the bike from sliding. Doesn't always work though and I'm on my second set of leathers already:LOL:

Thanks for all the help guys - much appreciated. I was really tempted by the 300mm lens until I read that report.....
