Zoom Lens for Motorsport (limited budget ish)

Hi guys, just about to buy a Nikon D7000 and would like to buy some good glass for it rather than my current lens selection.

Im mainly going to be shooting motorsport so would like something with good reach, i was originally looking at the Sigma 120-400mm but looking at a few reviews and peoples opinions it seems that it may be a little slow to focus which may not be the best thing for sport.

So with a budget of up to about 700 can anyone recommend a better lens for me, at the moment i have the Nikon 70-300mm VR which is not ideal for use with this camera.

What kind of motorpsort? If you're talking rallying, then I'd say both the 120-400 and the 70-300 are too slow and would look for a 70-200 f2.8 or 120-300 f2.8.
With your budget more likely a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and a decent TC would give some flexibility for a range of motorsport events.
 
Depends on the motorsport, OK in dark forests a f2.8 is better but I would have thought that on your budget the Sigma would be fine, I have no complaints on the focus speed of my 150-500
 
Well you've got a choice of (I suggest):

1) Nikon 70-300 VR
2) Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR I (second hand)
3) Sigma 100-300 f4 (probably second hand)

Obviously #2 has the best image quality, but the other two perform better at 201-300mm :D
 
I'd really not suggest any of the long primes as your starter for ten. Sure, I use them a fair bit and they are good, but getting a decent fast focusing zoom of the correct focal length would be #1 priority in my book.

The basic motorsport combo would be a good 70-200 and a 300 prime. With those two you are pretty sorted, but choosing between the 70-200 and the 300 as to which comes first, definitely the 70-200.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. I've been looking around at the 70-200 lenses, quite a bit more than i was originally intending to spend i think, especially if i have to factor in a TC aswell. Hmmmm, decisions have to be made!
