Been looking for a zoom lens for my D90 so the wife can treat me for xmas I want it for wildlife which sometimes calls for low light photo's.
I have been drooling over this 600mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR till I seen the price tag are there any cheaper quality lenses.

Thanks

The 300mm f4 with a 1.7 teleconverter is a cheaper option (or even the 300mm f2.8) and you lose almost nothing in image quality, its also a lot lighter.

Low light and long length = expensive.

Would agree about looking at the 300mm F4 if it's long enough. Still going to cost £1000 though but frankly that's a bargain compared to the 2.8 primes!

The Sigma above will give you plenty of length but is going to be quite slow for low light.

If you want to rein the costs in all together, the Nikon 70-300 VR and the new Tamron equivalent are worth a look. Neither especially fast or long but both in the £300-£400 zone and very good IQ.
