After much :bang: in deciding on a zoom lens, and being on a budget, it came down to a choice between two:

  1. Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens
  2. Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens

So come Saturday I dashed off to my local Jessops and got me the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, my decision was based on price and that it had the Image Stabilizer.

I gave the lens a road tests yesterday and was a little disappointed at the results at 200mm. The images appeared somewhat 'softer' than I would have liked. I am a newbie though.

Anyway, this has been on my mind overnight, so I decided to return the lens in exchange for my original choice, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens. Question is....have I done the right thing, and now got the better lens?

Opinions and comments appreciated. :help:

TIA

You have most definately done the right thing, you won't regret it, the 70-200 is the better lens by a fair margin.

You probably have made the right choice. :) The only disadvantage to the 70-200 is that you lose the 18-70. Image quality is going to be quite a bit better though.

Still got the 18-55 kit lens, this should keep me going for a while. What filters would you guys perceive to be absolutly essential as I build up my kit?

just watch your handshake at 200mm now that you don't have IS, otherwise you'll find your images to be soft too but for different reasons

I don't generally use filters so am probably the wrong person to answer this. Guess it depends what you want to use it for really, the only one I have is a polarising filter.

Some people use UV filters for protection on the lens, opinion is divided on this.
There are other filters used for landscapes, to slow your shutter speed in very bright conditions etc.

The polariser is a good one to start with though.

and yes you 70-200 is a terrific lens!

Enjoy

No camera bag showing so not know what you trying it out on?
Oh I dont think you can compare the two as both

Many new to photography and on a small budget quite like the 18-200mm lens, as they think its a lens for all occasions with a wide to zoom capability, unfortunately, unless in optimum conditions these hyperzooms as they are called promise lots and deliver very little, yes its compact has a nice zoom range, one lens for more than one occasion, probably ideal for a holiday lens, but comparing it to the 70-200mm f4, no comparison, the 70-200mm f4 is streets ahead of these compact lenses in autofocus speed, sharpness, image quality, the 70-200mm f4 a great lens for not too much outlay, one of the first lenses I bought. You won't regret it
