Hi All,

I am a complete noob here, and looking for a bit of advice. I want to start taking Wildlife photography seriously, what with Dartmoor and the surrounding area (Im based in Devon).

At the moment, I have used my 400D(Dont have any complaints with this from a noob point of view) mainly for day to day photos,zoo's, holidays and things like that. Occasionally a trip down to my local Falconry centre where i used to volunteer.

Im looking at either a Kenko 2x converter on a 'Canon Zoom Lens EF 90-300mm 1:4.5-5.6' (details taken straight from the lens there) or a Sigma 150-500mm DG APO HSM. Budget is about £750 here, but the main criteria is the zoom and image quality

What would peoples opinions be on the above? Any advice much appreciated :D

The Sigma. The Canon won't AF with any type of converter unless you bodge it and even if you do, I doubt that the IQ would stand the compromise.

In a word, no.

Used 100-400L is about £900, prolly favourite. Or 400L 5.6, or 300L 4 IS with 1.4x.

Well I have the Sigma on a Nikon, and have no complaints.
Though like you I am a bit of a noob as well.

Hi, Dan and welcome to the forum.

Being a Nikon user, I can't comment on Canon specific lenses but as a Sigma 150-500 user, I can comment on that from personal experience.

It's not light and can be a pain to lug about on the off chance it'll get used. While the OS will reduce camera shake a lot, it will do nothing about subject movement, so jittery or fast moving wildlife may well end up a bit blurred because it moved. £750 may be pushing your luck (although I see that Mifsuds [down the road in Brixham] list it at £749.99) a bit unless you're happy with 2nd hand kit.
 
Thanks for the replies, I had a play with one today down in Exeter. With regards to the fast moving wildlife, i was snapping away at some pigeons in the city centre and they seemed to come out fine when they were flying around. So i would assume that many of the BOP would be somewhat similar in movement, with the exception of Falcons maybe.

With regards to extenders/converters...I have been put off them as a couple people have said that you lose image quality?
