Is A J Purdy in trouble?

Keep in mind the Amazon offer for the Nikon mount is for 3~6 weeks delivery! That may well be after Christmas

Anybody phoned up to ask what exactly they do have in stock @ 25% discount ?

If I'm honest, its a scam, sharp practice, call it what you want, its not the sort of behaviour that will make AJPurdy my first port of call if I need some equipment in the future.
It reminds me of the cheap deals Aldi did on their Medion electronis equipment or Sony shops New Years day sales, the difference is they print the quantities of stock they're offering at the discount they're offering, so at least you know what the odds are.
AJPurdy can eat my shorts..I'm amazed at the number of AJP defence posts.

They are a well established company.
The sale is over a week old.
They are selling stock from a small store to move to a bigger one, hinting they don't have anough room to hold adequate stock.
They probably have fewer expensive lenses in stock at any given time and it is predominantly these people are wanting to buy
The lenses people have attempted to purchase and been told its out of stock are mainly more expensive specialist lenses

From what I can gather the internet orders are processed by people sitting at a screen reading the details off and typing them into another computer to make the sale, this would also explain the stock levels not updating automatically and why it took them a couple of hours to notify me that the details were wrong (an automatic system would show the error immediately)

Indeed ;)

Its a good way to build up a Customer database though ;)

You seem to be the only one having doubts though ;)

A happy customer will tell 10 others. An unhappy customer will post it on the Internet.

Edit: Sorry, I've just seen an ad in the paper and it made me smile. ICI are offering 25% off Dulux paint - maybe they're in trouble too?

I have, once I'd ascertained that the lens I wanted wasn't in stock I asked about a few others and then suggested to the girl that if they had a stock list she could email it to me and I'd post it here, but she declined

Seems odd that they wanted to miss out on potential sales.

The Nikon lens section of the Website now only has half a dozen items in it.... maybe they are removing things from their website as they run out of stock?

Hmmm... seems like most everything is gone now - even the Canon lens line up is limited, so I would say that their marketing has worked (if, of course that is what they wanted to do)

Funny thing though, the discount is applied to gift vouchers!!!

Phoned up AJ Purdy this morning about my order for a Canon 17-55mm placed on Tuesday. They said that they were out of stock, so destroyed my card details and that is that.

Not bothered to be honest. I would have been smiling if they had sent it out, but what have I lost? Nothing ........... but could have gained loads ;)

I went there this morning. Just one car outside when before there was 6 or 7, so no staff in? There was some bloke loading his car when i pulled up, he went inside and closed the shutter down. He wouldn't let me in and didnt want to talk to me so i left.

Perhaps he was robbing the joint

This doesn't sound good.

I'm with Andy and Diego here - this feels like an inventory clearance by a company hanging on by its fingertips. I think there'll be carnage on the High Street after Xmas anyway.

The new store means nothing - it will have been planned, mortgaged and signed for when credit was flowing easily and sales were bouyant. The High Street today is a very different place.

Agreed. I can't see why you'd want to have a new store (and it looks HUGE on their website) but have no stock for it, make no sense at all to me.

Shame if they gone because they have quite good prices on some stuff and I've probably put a couple of £k their way over the years... but this feels like the death knell.

Over-expansion at the wrong time, just as the DSLR market is perhaps plateauing?

With hardly any stock left on the website now.. feels like they've gone.

(feels a bit like the death throes of DigitalCamera.com who went earlier this year to me, big discounts then "Puff!")

Sounds like the party's over for AJ Purdy going by that......

Dixons have posted a £30m loss for the last six months of trading.

I think so - looks like they (along with most people) didn't see this contraction coming. Combine trying to service the costs of a new store with shrinking sales and that spells doom.

I notice that digital cameras are now included in the 25% off deal and there is a rudimentary note of stock levels.

Mind you, if the website is an indication of their total stock then there is more stuff for sale on the TP sales forum......

Well that's DSG who have posted the £30m loss, which covers Currys, Currys.digital and PC World , the main worry would be the £150 Net debt.

DSG will save £78m by not paying a first-half or full-year dividend

I've just been in there too - and was in the sales office....

I can say that at least 1 lucky person is getting a Nikon 70-200 for the discounted price (y) (unfortunately not me I hasten to add)

To be honest, it looked pretty much business as usual - I've been in there a few times since the move and nothing much seems to have changed, although there was less staff (and stock) than I remember, but it was lunchtime. There are cars outside, but they generally dont park right out front as this is where they would expect customers to park.

Sounds like they are not taking any money for items not in stock, so it's unlikely that anyone will lose out.

We'll have to wait and see. It will be a terrible shame if something bad does happen....

I went today and got my 25% off. I have made them aware of this thread and invited them to comment.

I have always found them professional and very helpful. The young lady that served me said they were having a big sale of stock items pre launch of new showroom and website......

lets hope they come on and clear up this matter.....

Absolutely - I've used them several times in the past with no problems and it'll be a shame if the credit squeeze catches another indie.

I went there today to collect a printer, when I asked are they shutting down I was told they are having a huge clear out and the website is being re designed and then will be back, but he was quite adamant that they are not shutting down, but i'm not so sure.
Seems odd because they wouldn't post the printer, they reckon they could only use royal mail and it was too heavy for RM to take.
It would be a real shame if they do shutdown cause they have been very good in the dealings I have had with them, they even held the printer for a day as it was the last one without any payment.
I personally would be very supprised if anyone gets screwed.

I was just on their site, and I realised that they are discounting not only the camera stuff ... but even computers! They have some nice Apple machines there, not too sure how competitive their prices are (their Sigma prices are not all competitive, even with their 25% discount).

If you're looking for a new machine, may be worth checking that section out.

the bit that really puzzles me, and why i think they are doomed is they have been in them premises since sometime in summer.

How can they suddenly not have room for the stock, they always managed at the smaller premises, so now it should be a doddle.

How many companies sell off everything because the website is getting redesigned.

I dont think they would screw anyone, after all they have been canceling orders they cant fulfill and not taking payment.

But i do feel they are discounting to get rid of it all before the administrators come in.

Hope you are wrong but that was the feeling I had even when talking to the young lady today....

I hope i am wrong too, i really do... But all the info we currently have points to the end of trading.

This credit crunch is going to have quite a few casualties i think.

.....

Sadly, the credit crunch will have huge effects on many .. business and private owners too. I am guessing that by early next year we'll be seeing a lot of used stuff put up for sale and 2nd hand item's prices will fall like a rock in water.

It's always a shame to see well respected companies having to shut up shop and I hope this doesn't happen with A J Purdy though it doesn't seem to look too good from the various reports.

With regards to their clearance sale, it looks like I may have been another of the lucky ones.

I ordered the Canon EF 12mm II and 25mm II extenders on my CC (just in case) on Tuesday and they arrived today. Saved £47 compared to WHE and even cheaper than Kerso.

That is what I did today as well :) but went in to get them as I live 10 mins away

If you were launching a new website then i) you would develop in in parallel to operating the exisiting site and simply switch between the two when the new one is ready, ii) you would not stop selling goods and taking orders, or run down your order take during this transition as you still have a business to run and staff to pay etc., iii) you would not clear out perfectly saleable stock at mega-discount prices especially when having just moved to larger premises - clear outs are for overage goods you can't sell.

Sadly, I think they are sailing very close to the end. I hope not, but the signs aren't good.

Which is why I added what I did "but i'm not so sure." but tbh I wouldn't call 25% a mega discount 50% would have been better :D

well, the website is now closed, they say check back next week, we will have to wait and see.

If they have gone they will not be the last.

I believe this recession is going to be deeper and harder than many are prepared to contemplate. MFI and Woolworths are the tip of the iceberg, both have been in trouble for a considerable period and have been struggling to survive even before the credit crunch.

Expect to see some names you would have thought were as safe as a bank and as solid as a rock. Mind you, after Northern Rock maybe nothing is as safe as bank and as solid as a rock. Don't be surprised to see another bank fail.

Retailers are the immediate barometer of economy. We have no money, they get no money, they go bust. Suppliers and manufacturers reduce head count, stock, material and services purchasing due to less demand in the retail channel which causes even less demand in the retail channel.

The problem is that we have actually had no money for a long time. Unfortunately the banks chose to give us real money which we could really spend secured against fantasy property values which depended upon them continuing to give larger amounts of money to support the values against which debt was secured. It had to end in tears and we have not even begun to cry yet.

If AJP has gone then what is a minor inconvenience for us is a life changing event for some of those involved with the business.

John

Edit: Just reread this a few hours after posting and I sound like a real miserable b*****. :)

Took delivery today :D

Anyone get any £1k Nikkors with the 25% off? ;)

Yep ME!

Bestest birthday EVER!!!

To be honest I was getting really worried that I'd lost my money.
Paid for it on Debit card (won't be doing that again) on Tuesday night.
My Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens arrived today.
I hope they haven't gone this lens looks silly on my D40 and I really want the D300 now.

IMHO Purdys could be in trouble but it deffo wasn't a scam.
