Mark, can you give instructions on how you made this?

Here's a few pictures of my setup, I say It's DIY but in reality the important bit is bought, the articulation bits are from RAM but I made the plate to fix to the camera (OK so I drilled a few holes in a bit of Ali) and the diffuser.

The next step is to get a longer arm for the articulation and to make a bigger diffuser.

Well all the equipment everyone has makes my little point & shoot & lamp look very inadequate

I use this canon a470 for close up stuff because I am very tight to buy lens for my other camera

LCD hood (Mark 2, lightweight). The Blu Tak helps keep the hood in place.

The diffuser bowl (a modified LordV coke can diffuser), was originally constructed for use with Canon 430exii flash, but with slits in neck to allow it to fit into the connector and rotate within the connector. The velcro on three sides of the diffuser's neck catch somewhat on the staples in the round end of the connector enough to keep the diffuser in the position it is put into.

IMG_0073 PS1 CrClExDf7x30NoLu50,2,2 900hSS95x0.3 by gardenersassistant, on Flickr

The connector is squared off at one end to fit over the flash, and has gaffer tape at that end to stop the staples scratching the flash head.

IMG_0074 PS1 CrClExCu900hSs95x0.3 by gardenersassistant, on Flickr

Since the diffuser bowl can be rotated, when the camera is in landscape orientation it is possible to throw light from above, from above left ...

IMG_0079 PS1 Df7x30Cu900hSs95x0.3 by gardenersassistant, on Flickr

or above right.

IMG_0080 PS1 CrCu900hSS95x0.3 by gardenersassistant, on Flickr

When the camera is in portrait mode it is possible to throw light from above, middle or below left.

The flash has a window at the front that allows a lower-power beam to be directed straight forwards when the head is not pointing straight forwards. I have not experimented with this yet and might want to diffuse this too if it proves useful.

Why have I never thought ot using the tap and sink like that for droplets. Of course it'd take a bit of fine adjustment to get the tap dripping regularly but much easier than setting up stands with bags of water and flow regulators :).

T'is the reason why I haven't tried droplets much (esp. with a 3 yr old about :) ).

what did you buy? go on... tell us :)

what did you buy? go on... tell us :)

Mainly bits and bob:

Raynox DCR-250 Macro Attachment - £42.87 (Amazon)
Nikon Br-2A 52mm Reversing Adapter Ring - £30.00 (Amazon)
Macro Shot Focusing Focus 4 Way Slider Rail Truck - £46.99 (Amazon)
Macro Extension Tube Ring for Nikon DSLR Camera - £8.50 (Amazon)
C-Shape Flash Bracket - £10.49 (eBay)

But they were all impulse buys having been inspired by stuff seen and read on this thread!

I've just ordered the 58mm version of the Reverse Adapter ring as I found the original 52mm too small for my lens. Hard to read through product specs thoroughly at that time of the night...!:D

What would i have to buy to get this good a Macro on a canon?

Some impressive stuff there, i doubt i would ever go to such lengths myself and i am happy with the basic Nikon D90 and Sigma 105 f2.8 Macro.

I know what , I can't decide you mean! 2 months ago I had no intrest in macro, then tried a macro lens and now have a nikon 105mm macro lens, a full set of kenko tubes, manfrotto 454 rail and soon to. Have a magic arm or maybe a ring flash, I can't decide

I think I'm getting the ring flash next, but I'm also beginning to think this photography bug has eaten away most of my sensibilities....! This forum does inspire one to aspire to achieve greater heights in the arts...

It does take away your sensibilities,

Will take a photo of my "Macro" setup tomorrow when im out to post here.

Fairly standard set up, 50D, 100 2.8 + kenco tubes + 580ex
Recently aquired the flash so have made a new diffuser.
- Silvered bubble wrap insulation with the side of a gallon plastic container on the front + kitchen paper. The foil is stiff enough not to need the sides taping allowing it to fold flat for transport.

Hi Les, I see you mention the A390 in the post but your kit list says a380.

Just wondered how you're getting on with the ring flash on the a380 and if there are any issues to be aware of?

Thanks

Paper plate diffuser!! Genius :)

Oh and I suppose the fly shots are ok too ;)

Nice work

Okay, here's my current lighting setup, I used to use a Boling "C" bracket from FITP but since the mpe-65 extends so much it was a pretty unwieldy system. I'm now using a 30cm Novoflex flexible arm (from Speedgraphic) and the base plate from the "C" bracket:

Off camera
4560404961_b880440054.jpg

Bigger

Mounted, the arm is so stiff you can use it as a handhold which is VERY useful!

Carl

Thanks Carl. i ordered 45cm flexible arm last week and i got it today, its a bit long and heavier than i thought but hey. Thanks again

I have an o flash, sb900, d90 and a nikkor f2.8 105mm

Just ordered a coupling ring and wondered if anybody else had any joy using this setup?
