The Ultimate Car Rig Photography Thread!

that's awesome, can you share a static shot of what you did? great work. My only crit is its a shame you didnt do it in the opposite direction so we could see more of the alloy rather than the tyre. Excellent though, saw it on instagram and was impressed :)

Really like that Sammy, that angle of shot really suits the SLK.
Picked up my new pole today wow what a difference it's going to make, much sturdier than the painters pole, can't wait to try it out.

Are those shots not using a boom then, just a cup and an extension? They look great a little different from the normal rig shots.
I purchased some aluminium tubes that have been swaged for me so they slot together easily. 4x5 foot 51mm 16 gauge.

Just did a trial fit and it's so much more solid but a fair bit heavier too. Busy for the next few days so probably won't get chance to rig until Sunday.

new pole looks good, looking forward to seeing more shots with it!

yeah the two shots i posted last are just with one cup and the extension bar, mega easy to do, no movement at all as there is no rig and also no editing to remove a rig :)

Andyfo......you've GOT to do one with the nippers car!!
Yeah but need to work out how to fix the rig to it first. It's my youngest grandsons car and it's remote control so should be easy to get it moving with him in it.

you mean the ones myself, @mattemus and @cardiff_gareth have?

They are made by Gareth's mate and are 6m telescopic carbon fibre. Gareth has set up a facebook page www.facebook.com/carbonrig and more info will be added to that shortly.

If you're interested give @cardiff_gareth a pm and he can give you more info :)

My opinion is it's great, the fact it is telescopic makes it handy to adjust and transport and with it being carbon fibre it is mega light. It's by no means a pro rig but for the price it is epic!

It's 3 x 2m sections, so minimum length is just ever so slightly over 2m. There is a bit of flex but it is controllable. I am getting some better photos to show the rig and its spec. Will hopefully get some soon :)

Sounds like a fishing pole, never thought of those. Should be able to pick one up 2nd hand for pennies.

I think it's actually an industrial water fed pole, more commonly used for washing windows. Fishing poles don't have the strength really, they're designed to flex. Water fed poles on the other hand are generally thicker sidewall and sturdier

In case you are actually serious, I would just like to say in no uncertain terms, don't do it.

FWIW I think you'll find the Carbon Rig pole referred to up there started life as a water fed pole for washing windows, but has had some alternations to the carbon fibre to make it more suitable, so even then isn't exactly a re-purposed piece of something else.

I didnt mean the whole pole, you can get 14m carp poles so you would only need to use the larger extension sections and not the tip sections that have all the flex in them.
I looked at this, but you get a lot of flex as that's what they are designed to do. We have a local company who make carbon poles for washing windows, but the issue then was clamping (thin walls not designed to take load that way) and some slight flex, which caused bouncing if not very careful.
The ones mentioned above have some thicker walls, strength areas, so are modded past just washing poles.

any photos of the set up? was this on an actual police car? pretty epic, how did you arrange that?

My crit would be, there is a lot of blur in the shot. What were your camera settings? With a shot set up like this there should be next to no movement in the magic arm as it is just attached to a cup, did you roof mount or have it on the side window?

Great effort for a first shot though, a lot better and more interesting than my first one was! :)

It's actually on the response car used by the London Air Ambulance when the aircraft isn't flying ( mainly at night or in pea soupers ), I'm one of the paramedics and take a lot of photos for the charity side to try and raise money/ publicity stuff.
This was a Delkin fat gecko with a Sony Rx100mk3. It was attached to the rear window and the arm angle increased. Pushed down a very bumpy back road in Lambeth, which might account for the blur. The blue lights were only on at the front as otherwise they were blinding and ruined the shot.
It's a Skoda Octavia Vrs Estate and is a cracking drive.

I made this with some spare time this afternoon. Quick job, iPod in a windy car park. Exposure was 30 sec. f/11 ISO 200 with a 20mm lens on full frame.

Video is pants, quality from iPod isn't great but the purpose is to show how easy this can be done, how it's done and with what. Shot on my tod just using self timer mode, no fancy triggers.

Love it! Something I've always wanted to get into. Always wondered what the potential was for the business side of things too - either commercial or posh clients wanting shots of their posh cars etc. Don't see many guys up this way doing it.

Nice quick video! I always shoot with the camera fully upside down out of habit, gives a lower angle and less of the rig in shot!

Not posted for a while but here are 2 from my last 2 shoots... Camaro and an mg midget...

I shot this camera upside down. Hate it hate it hate it. Brain does not compute.
