    Canon 50mm f/1.2 upgrade from f/1.4 - worth it?

OK so I've been mulling over this for ages.. I have a Canon 50mm f/1.4 which I'm very pleased with.. fast and sharp.. BUT, all my other lenses are L's and I'm seriously tempted to upgrade it to the 50mm f/1.2. The weatherproofing and fixed front element would be nice to have (the front element...

    opinions on canon 7D

You'll get annoyed every time you read a thread from someone who says the IQ of their 5D mk III is so much better than their old 7D ;) A.

    Slide and Negative scanner

The last time I looked, Plustek is the only company still making dedicated slide and negative scanners, since Nikon stopped doing the Coolscan. This doesn't include all the cheap and nasty things advertised in the back of the Daily Mail :nono: I can't understand why there is such a lack of...

    canon ff list

    If we're talking about currently available models, make that the 1D X (and 1D C), 5D mk III and 6D :) A.

    Reliability - Nikon vs. Canon

The original 5D had an issue with the mirror coming unstuck.. Canon service centres would fit clips on either side of the mirror as standard when doing repairs/sensor cleans on 5D's. You'd have thought Canon would have learned from this :cuckoo: Still, I assume that this is problem that's...

    Reliability - Nikon vs. Canon

Slightly OT... printers have fallen in price so much that they're almost disposable technology. When you can buy a new one for the price of a couple of ink cartridges, you might as well buy them in packs of two for when one dies  It's probably a case of the printer itself being a...

EF lens on a EFS body ( canon 600D) pros and cons ?

Technically there's no reason why you shouldn't use an EF lens on a crop body. The only argument against it is in terms of excessive weight and price - since the sensor will only be using the central portion of the lens, the glass at the edges is unused. You're paying for it (especially so in...

    Nikon Vs Canon Chess Set

The only problem with playing with this set is that white would always win :D A.

    Nikon Vs Canon Chess Set

I was thinking it was a bit excessive to have 70-200mm f/2.8's as pawns (wouldn't 50mm's be better?) until I remembered that all the Canon 'pieces' have to be white :cuckoo: :D A.

Does my 5D3 have a problem?

The issue you've described with shooting in fluorescent lighting is completely normal and well documented (e.g. here). Fluorescent lights do not provide constant illumination - they flicker based on the mains frequency. The problem here is that you're using too high a shutter speed - you're...

    Nikon 14-24 for group shot?

Don't do it :nono: The distortion you will get at the edges of the frame will look horrible. OK for a landscape, but not a group photo when people's faces will be looked at! The widest I would go for this sort of work would be 24mm. A.

    Thinking of replacing my Canon 17-40mm L with a 20mm f/2.8

I've had my 17-40 L for a few years now and have recently been using it on holiday. It's always bugged me that this lens is not particularly sharp away from the centre, especially when zoomed towards the 40mm end. To be fair, it only really becomes apparent when pixel-peeping, and it doesn't...

Canon 5D Mark II... Focus screen

If you're going to rinse it under the tap, some mild detergent will get rid of the greasy fingerprint. Seriously! I'd rinse it in distilled water to make sure you don't get any chalky residue, although I imagine you'll be drying it off immediately.. use something like a pec-pad to wipe it dry. A.

    D4x this year

This is starting to get a bit silly. At the risk of sounding like Bill Gates with his infamous "640kb is enough memory for anyone" quote, 20mp is already better resolution than the finest-grained 35mm film available. When the resolution of the sensor is such that lenses are struggling to do it...

    24-105 L 'red-ring'

+1 Just what I was thinking  Alternatively, time to upgrade to a 24-70mm f/2.8 L.. Mine is 5 yrs old this year, and I'm pleased to say my ring is still intact  A.
