    Lightweight proper camera for travelling

I travel ultra light so for me it’s a conscious decision to only take my iPhone. The new one is superb, and wonderfully discreet. If I travel somewhere for the purpose of photography I take my FZ1000 which covers everything. I do like the idea of the Fuji, though.

Managing / sorting out 8tb of photos in Lightroom

I see it like this... what do I take photos for? For me, a photo has to trigger a vivid memory, waymark a place, person or event, stir an emotion, or just look damned interesting from thumbnail to image. I keep everything for a year or so, and then have blasts of going through my stuff. If it...

    Hand carrying Telephotos (200mm +)

Canon 7dii + 100-400Lii plus 1.4x extender. The lens foot used to mount the whole rig in a Spider holster. Sits on my hip, no weight when walking, lens and camera balance to lie horizontally upside down, lens pointed behind. One smooth arm action brings it out of the holster and into the...

    Recommend me a photographers belt....

I use a Spider holster for a 7dii / 100-400+1.4x walkaround for wildlife. If I’m walking, it’s always ready, quick draw and return like an ol’ texan gunslinger lol

Losing GAS? Happy with your kit?

Always a little bit of shiny stuff interest, but haven’t changed setups now in a couple of years. Finally realised I missed an SLR for that optical ’connection’, finally happy with the 7Dii and the 100-400ii/EF1.4xii combo... I needed to regress, not progress. The iPhone takes care of all the...

What birds or bird have you seen today – communal thread, I hope!

Been there lol... though I have had my fair share of lucky birds this week to redress the balance. I think there's a chasm between what a birder with a scope and a photographer find acceptable though, any greyer and the bittern would've been bitterness.... for what it's worth, finally looked at...

What birds or bird have you seen today – communal thread, I hope!

While others waited patiently for the Collared Pratincole, I took a walk to avoid the crowds and was rewarded by a lovely bittern, though the light was poor - typical, never had one fly this slow and low before. Oh, for the sunshine..... I did eventually spot the Praticole, and it’s been a rare...

    Do you keep the boxes?

Isn’t that the whole point of a loft? To chuck stuff up without rhyme or reason because it might come in useful in 15-20yrs time? I should keep a swear box up there myself....

    Shooting from hides.

I use my car a bit too. I do lament it when I miss potentially great shots (boxing hares, birds of prey etc) whilst I'm doing 60 on a fast A road in traffic where there's no chance to brake let alone stop.. I've had reasonable success with my bean bag and green scrim scarf. I always figured the...

    Bloody WEX

Wex get more things right than wrong. As a shop, my local FWIW, they're friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful.

    Do you keep the boxes?

if I'm buying used, a choice of two in identical condition I'll always pick the boxed. I keep useful and tough general boxes in case of eBay emergency, I'd never put brown packing tape directly onto an original box I did this weekend however go through the loft mercilessly to make some space...

Is an RX10 iv going to frustrate me?

I really liked the idea of the RX, but push come to shove I just felt more reassured by the modularity of SLRs [For example, £1500 gets a very decent 7D2 and 400/5.6 or 100-400L]. It’s an excellent cam and for me its real win is the light weight take-anywhere type package even more than the...

    Monopod and Head

Ironically, for walkabout birding out here on the Norfolk Broads, it's exactly the opposite - quite often the only way of catching birds in and out of the reeds/trees is handholding with an unrestricted vertical/horizontal range. I'd use a monopod for more fixed targets such as waders or open...

    Monopod and Head

I'd use a decent ball head on a monopod, but I'm often moving so I personally can't get along with them, for me they just get in the way... .. I just use a double barrel bean bag. Feather light, always something to rest it on, and it doubles as a nice comfy seat. Bean bag, a green or camo scrim...
