    Great link! Thanks :D.

Which basic kit to consider buying

To be honest, I used top end Elinchrom gear in my last job (where I had free access to a fully stocked pro studio for one of the big national newspapers), and for what I do, the Interfits are just fine - I'd be really interested to try the Stable Imaging kit as well, as I think it would also do...

I would hope to be able to do it before then - give me a couple of weeks though, (being realistic).

    Tokina 12-24 vs Sigma 10-20

I agree - the Nikon 12-24, Sigma 10-20, and Tokina 12-24 are all fantastic lenses.

I gotcha - and yes, you're right. I'll experiment and see what difference a couple of 100 k makes to skin tones.

So presumably :rules: buying lights with only a 3 stop range, isn't a problem, if they perform so poorly when the power is less than 1/8th power.

lol - well, for me, consistency from shot to shot, when not changing the power settings is what's important for me - if I need to change power settings, I'll shoot a grey/white/black card, to check colour temp. I'll give it a go next time I have my lights out. If the Elinchroms are...

That sounds good. To check colour temperature, shoot a white piece of paper to set a custom wb, and then shoot a number of shots. The colour should be identical (or near as damnit) in all the shots. I'm not sure if there's a more scientific way to check the colour temp in the shots.

Ordered a Nikon D40 and then I did not = fuming!

Bummer! I recently had a credit card be blocked, due to some suspicious transactions. . . in Tesco, and the station.

    Blinkin' cat!

I am unable to take shots of people not blinking. With Canon ETTL, it's imperceptible, iTTL makes everyone blink.

Good luck, keep us updated, and post some shots :D.

Garry raises some valid points which shouldn't be totally discounted. I would disagree with the 3 stop range being such an issue - my lights also only have a 3 stop range, and I've never had to turn them right down. Also, whilst the light may be a bit harsher, using shoot through brollies, or...

But then you lose the benefits of iTTL, and have to manually calculate the flash power (which you cannot do with the built in flash anyway). Canon cameras do the same, but it seems slightly more noticeable with Nikon iTTL.

It looks like the white balance is a little off with the poorer shot. I would check if your camera has a custom white balance setting - if it's like the Canon or Nikon DSLRs I've used, it's dead easy to use - just shoot a white piece of paper, and the white balance will then be spot on. Also...

Glad to help :D. I'm happy with the Interfits, but. . . the Stable imaging set is still quite tempting. I would have thought that the Interfits are more solid, and built to a higher standard, though Neil imports his kit directly, so it could be cheaper simply because he's cutting out the middle...
