He's clearly mostly shooting birds and wildlife. As far as I can remember I've never found the need for more than 1/8000 or had the possibility of going that high most of the time

With f1.2 and f1.4 lenses yes I have hit that limitation but once again it's not like a constant issue.

I found myself hitting it a fair amount on sunny days with my 50 1.2. And having to switch to the ES .
 
Even in the halflight we get I can hit 1/8,000 at f1.2, f1.4. Have to say I've seen no issues with the electronic shutter when shooting at those speeds but under some artificial light you can get banding but I've seen less with my Sony cameras than with Panasonic MFT, can't say why.

One thing I would lke, well two things, auto switching from mechanical to electronic shutter for shutter speed and ISO 50 being available in auto ISO instead of having to manually select it.

My 35 GM turned up today and thanks for everyone's advise when I asked my questions a couple of months ago on which 35mm to go for.(y)

I have also traded some lenses after using the Sony system for about 4 months. I swapped out my Sigma 24-70mm F2.8ii Art lens for the Sony 20-70mm f4. On a recent holiday a 20mm lens would have suited me better. (I used to have the Panasonic 20-60mm and liked the 20mm option when I had the S5 & S1R cameras).

I have also changed my Voigtlander 15mm f4.5 MF lens and Viltrox 14mm f4 Lens for the faster Viltrox 16mm f1.8 lens.

I'm about sorted now but I might pick up a Macro lens and the 400-800mm lens if I have an itch.

Used to that that exact setup, it's very good indeed but ended up swapping all three lenses :D

Swapped viltrox 16/1.8 for Sony 16G
35GM for sigma 35/1.2ii
And 20-70G for sigma 20-200mm

No right or wrong answer all great lenses but need to satisfy the GAS itch too :ROFLMAO:

It does look bad on the Viltrox lens which still has the protective label fitted...Plus I used the 55mm f1.8 lens. Don't you get me wanting the 50mm f1.2 next . :runaway:

He doesn't include the Sony 24mm f2.8 which I have in the alternatives section but I don't think they're reviewed it. He doesn't seem overly keen on this Sigma lens but I can see the appeal in the build and anyone with similarly built Sigma lenses might want a 24mm that matches.

I'm happy enough with my Sony f2.8... after correction... as after correction the IQ is ok for me and it's small and light.

I like the look of the Viltrox 35 1.2 LAB lens but at over 900g is it suitable for all day carry?

Produces some lovely images, especially when paired with the new A7RVI.

Hence i went with the sigma 35mm f1.2ii :D

If you don't mind the weight viltrox seems to better buy on Sony and definitely better buy in nikon since Nikon version is massive and expensive
Unfortunately Sony don't make 1st party version :(

Mate of mine had the Viltrox for a while. A.F was all over the place, had to return it eventually he has the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN II now.
 
You know I totally forgot about the Sigma 1.2, seems like DigitalRev are the cheapest at £1110.

The 35 1.4GM can be bought cheapest for £794, 1.2 aperture worth the £300?

It’s been a while since I owned the 35 GM but I always loved the images it produced.
 
Only you can make your mind up. I don't think the stop and a bit difference between f1.2, 1.4 and 1.8 or even f2 for light gathering is enough of a difference to influence me but there's bokeh and depth too but again, not enough for me for 99.9% of the time. Weight and bulk and being as inconspicuous as can be with a camera and lens are much more important to me.

Over to you to make your mind up :D

I got up this morning and it was a nice day so I thought I'd go out and take a picture after church as I haven't been out for a couple of weeks but after church there was complete cloud cover and dead flat light so I didn't bother. Maybe tomorrow :D

I swapped my 35GM for sigma 35/1.2ii

I had 35GM since release for 5 years. Great lens indeed.

Objectively it's not worth the extra £300. But the heart wants what it wants :D

For me, it wouldn't be and isn't :ROFLMAO:

The smaller size, lighter weight and 67mm filter thread of the 35GM are much more important than f/1.4 vs f/1.2
 
Will it be your main prime?

I was happy to go for the size, weight and cost of the 50 1.2 as that will be my main lens.
If I’m getting a 35/85 again it will be a 1.4 at the most.
The 50 is 780g and it’s very noticeable not just in weight but size , a lot more than I expected to be honest. Carrying my 28-75 or 20/1.8 is a luxury now in comparison.

I’m getting tired of heavy gear, I've much preferred using a lighter setup (RX1R II and now X100VI) as an EDC. For me the price and weight penalty of the f1.2 over the f1.4 isn't worth it for an all day lens. Sure in short spells, but not all day for me. YMMV.

Yes you’re right, the smaller and lighter size will be beneficial especially as most of my camera gear is carry on and the smaller and lighter the better.

It won’t be no, I’ve actually got the 20 1.8 and the 24 1.4 but there’s something special about the 35mm focal length that’s always appealed to me.

I also have the Sigma 85 1.4 and the Sigma 135 1.4 but the wife uses those a lot more than I do.

I was thinking of asking the same question today. My next purchase is a macro lens and from what I have read this lens would suit my needs. May swap in my 70-350mm and buy the 1.4 TC to go with the 70-200mm

I had the 70-350mm which i replaced with 70-200mm f4ii. I used it with 1.4x a lot. In fact most of the shots i have with this lens is with the 1.4x
Hence i ended up trading it for tamron 50-300mm for weight savings.

Recently replaced 20-70mm+50-300mm with sigma 20-200mm. Now I'm missing that 300mm end again, so I am thinking of rebuying 70-350mm :ROFLMAO:

I've gone full circle!

Trouble is the Sony, Lexar or Prograde ones are hideously expensive. Been therefore looking on Amazon, and there are a couple of brands that I've never heard of (Pergear and Chipfancier), that seems to be much cheaper (albeit not quite as fast as the big boys). Does anyone have any experience with these brands and would recommend them, or is it better spending a few hundred more to get the well known brands ?

I've used pergear for a while, been faultless for me. Last year I upgraded to the ultra fast type 4.0 ones linked below. There was a promo on at the time, got 2 512GB cards for £315. My camera can't write that fast, but the transfer from the card to computer is like lightening, plus if I ever get a camera that can ustilise the 4.0 cards I'm already sorted (y)

Another shout for Pergear been using them for 2/3 years with no bother at all both the older 800mbs and the newer type 4 which are lightning fast transferring to the computer.

I would say though don't be tempted to order direct from Pergear they are often cheaper ordered direct but I had huge issues trying to get them to deliver and eventually ended up with a refund. Everyone I have spoke to has had similar experience. Get them from Amazon.
 
New toy just arrived. Been working like two men and a wee lad lately so deserved an unnecessary purchase. :p

We already have the Sony 35 GM, the Sony 35 f/1.8 and the Sigma 35 f/2.

Will probably get rid of the 35 f/1.8. Really dislike the colours and bokeh from that lens.

I'm having a day at home, cut the lawns, did the weeding and looked at the flowers.

I don't know what these are. I don't like calling them weeds so they're out of place and unexpected flowers.
