Hi all, I have been offered some work shooting my local football team. I am looking for the best lens I can get for under £1000. Any help would be appreciated.

What Nikon camera are you using?
I have a D750. I also have a Z6. I have a 70-200mm f2.8 and a 24-70mm f2.8 but i’m guessing i’ll need a bit more reach.

Should be able, to pick up a used, Nikon 200 - 500 for under £1000. Could then use, on your Z6 in the future, when you purchase an FTZ adapter.
Although, that said, I'd be tempted to get the Nikon Z 180 - 600, around £1300 from Panamoz, but obviously, that would not be compatible with your D750.

I already have the FTZ adapter so that would make sense. I am just worried about the f5.6 aperture once the clocks go back in October.

I think, where you are likely to be situated for the football games, will have an impact. If you're on the sidelines, 300 2.8 is probably fine, but you may find it useful to purchase a teleconverter, given the D750 is full frame.

It's a circle of tradeoffs; if you have to crop then you might as well have used a longer lens at a slower aperture, or you can do the same by using a TC... it all winds up about the same. When light gets low I usually use my 400/2.8 + TC's; stepping down/removing the TC's as the light gets worse, and looking for more environmental/wider images. Modern cameras with low noise characteristics and current noise reduction programs make a big difference (the D750 and Z6 are both good).

I have also been considering the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, the f2.8 would be great for shooting football through the winter and possibly under floodlights too
It's a very good lens on it's own, but heavy. It doesn't work very well with TC's though; the 60-600 is sharper then (I have both). 300mm isn't much increase over what you've already got... it's the same as switching to DX mode in terms of composition.

Hi, Thanks for that. Yeah, the 200-400mm would make more sense as I would then have cover from 70mm to 400mm with my 2 bodies. The D750 is awesome in low light/high ISO. I shot a friends wedding a couple of years ago and in some of the darker corners I was shooting at ISO 10000 and came away with decent images. I did use the noise reduction in Lightroom too.
