The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

The Canon version weighs 1195g, a bit of a chonker.
Looks mahoosive here too  :$ The Sigma f/1.2 looks quite a bit bigger than the f/1.4, a bigger difference than I thought it might be.

Hood's on though. Need to see it without the hood to judge the size, and then there's the weight.

I suppose the interest in f1.2 over the f1.4 will depend on the quality of the bokeh?

You can still see the size difference with the hood on (y)

The 85mm's not light at 905g, although I don't know how it compares to other lenses of this type.
It's lighter than the Canon and nikon equivalents.
I'm in two minds, so won't be buying it immidiately. But if I come across a good deal later in life I might pick one up :D

The sigma 20-60mm looks a good alternative (on paper) to the Sony 20-70mm, smaller and approx 100g lighter, just a shame there’s no aperture ring.

Doesn't seem as sharp looking at reviews. Like dpreview says it's probably the best kit lens replacement. Sony 20-70mm can also be had for less probably given it's been out a while.

Bravo Sigma. Better focus motors, significantly smaller and cheaper.
It’s good if it’s not at the sacrifice of IQ, pmac says it’s got bad fringing so I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve seen the reviews myself.

I wonder if Sony will bring one out now

These are all TINY compared to 1.4 HSM version which is by all means better than 1.4 DG DN.

Now the 1.2 is pretty much the reason to get E or L mount body alone.

To compare this with 1.4 ART DN, this has proper focus motor vs STM abomination that should have never been invented, almost zero distortion vs heavy requiring profile correction use, only minor vignetting.
You could compare this with Canon or sony 1.4 II but even then that's likely coming on top before even considering the price.

Sigma really could do 65 or 70mm f/1. This is a pretty useful focal range and being stuck at f/2.8 is not so nice. OK, now you have a couple of f/2 options in Sony zooms.

I’m not sure what Nikons issue is with releasing telescope size primes, but the canon is 7 years old now. I’m sure the mk2 will match or beat it in everything bar price.
Maybe it will give Sony a kick up the ass to make their own
It will most likely cost north of 3k and could still have slower AF or heavier vignette, maybe even 15% distortion as their signature innovation LOL You would only get one if you are daily high end wedding pro or a dentist.

Watched most the reviews earlier today.
Was smaller and lighter than both the Nikon and canon versions.

The trade of seems to be bad purple fringing at 1.2.
Kills it for me.
Where have you seen the bad fringing? I've watched a couple of YT videos now and there's nothing mentioned except for very minor LoCA

Has anyone seen any comparisons of the new 85mm f1.2 DG DN vs the f1.4 version, I can't see any on YT at the moment.

Anyone seen the release of the OM PEN, how is it basically the same size and weight of an A7C?

I kind of wanted to replace my A7C with a A7V and maybe get something smaller still for taking everywhere to replace my RX100 but with better controls and quality.

I’ve seen the press release from OM. It’s an ugly thing, and that’s coming from an Olympus fan! If I recall, though I’ve binned the press release, it’s aroung 380 grams, but I could be mistaken.

EDIT this should take you to the relevant OM page https://view.eao-email.omsystem.com/?vawpToken=SVUADV5BRCYEFLTLV4PWXGGHAY.510006

The dimensions are fractionally bigger I believe, but the weight is quite a bit less, over 100g less. The issue with going smaller is it becomes less ergonomic to hold.

This one shows it, not sure what the other one I watched was, there were two that showed it and another one that said said he was getting a number of af misses in real world use.. he is a wedding photographer that uses a 50/1.2 as his main so said could be because he isn’t used to 85 or the lens. His stuff is more real use not shooting test charts or dummies (most were still in focus just less hits than his Sony 50)

I quite like the look of the silver one.

I don't think that looks that bad, easily corrected in post. YMMV (y)

Looks worse than my 50/2 Viltrox and as bad as my Sony 85 1.8…
I’m not spending £1300 on a lens and then having to struggle with purple LoCal in back lit or highlighted shots.

Might just be me though.

My favourite 85 was my Nikon 1.4G and its was a b*tch at times with fringing. The Sony 1.8 is the same and why I got rid.
even in LR you would end up with a colourless muddy edge or being forced to go monochrome.

I think for me it's more of a case I'm not willing to spend £1300 on a lens that I'll barely use. My 85mm f1.4 is my least used lens. It will be interesting to see how it compares in the real world as I've never had an issue with CA's on my f1.4 so if the f1.2 is similar I really can't see it being an issue in the real world. I haven't taken many backlit shots but I have taken pics of cars and bikes with plenty of chrome which is where I tend to see it the most.

Looking at the issues this new Sigma has made me think of the Sigma 84mm f1.4 HSM I had for my Canon DSLR's. It wasn't a great lens by modern standards but I thought it gave a nice look. My Sony f1.8 is definitely sharper but I think part of the Sigma nice look was the softer look.

Can this new Sigma be loved for it's look, maybe minor issues and all?

I don't use an 85mm often enough to justify buying a better one. but good luck to those who do.

Seems to have a decent bokeh
LoCA while present doesn't seem all that bad to me

One day I'll own one i think but that day might be far away depending on how quickly they show up in used market and at good prices

Apart from that and some vignetting it looks excellent to me.

Does the Sigma 85mm 1.4 ART DN not still use a stepping motor?

it’s a focal length I used to love.
Maybe it was the lens but I never gelled with my Sony 1.8 in the same way.
Now I have the 50/1.2 I. Ant see me spending that much on an 85 at the moment.
I’m thinking of selling my 28-75 and buying either a 24-70gm2 or saving abit longer and buying a 70-200( another I never fully gelled with on Nikon due to size, while having kids.

That one is STM. Sigma had a low phase of using STM motors after HSM which were fine if not perfectly quiet for video, and before the new HLA linear motors.

Same thing happened at Nikon, except they are just only now starting to use linear motors with gen II updates of their key zooms. Pretty much why I never bought into Z8.

Vignetting has become part of the charm now :ROFLMAO:

Most/all of these fast primes have vignetting
I like a vignette, I think it gives subjects more pop.

Ah I see, it's the 1.2 that uses linear motors. I'm guessing it can shift all the glass faster. I think my Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 has dual linear motors, kind of sounds like overkill for such a small lens.

Glad I didn't go down the Nikon route then.
