You can still see the size difference with the hood onHood's on though. Need to see it without the hood to judge the size, and then there's the weight.
I suppose the interest in f1.2 over the f1.4 will depend on the quality of the bokeh?
It's lighter than the Canon and nikon equivalents. The 85mm's not light at 905g, although I don't know how it compares to other lenses of this type.
Doesn't seem as sharp looking at reviews. Like dpreview says it's probably the best kit lens replacement. Sony 20-70mm can also be had for less probably given it's been out a while. The sigma 20-60mm looks a good alternative (on paper) to the Sony 20-70mm, smaller and approx 100g lighter, just a shame there’s no aperture ring.

It’s good if it’s not at the sacrifice of IQ, pmac says it’s got bad fringing so I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve seen the reviews myself.

I’m not sure what Nikons issue is with releasing telescope size primes, but the canon is 7 years old now. I’m sure the mk2 will match or beat it in everything bar price.
These are all TINY compared to 1.4 HSM version which is by all means better than 1.4 DG DN.Looks mahoosive here tooThe Sigma f/1.2 looks quite a bit bigger than the f/1.4, a bigger difference than I thought it might be.

It will most likely cost north of 3k and could still have slower AF or heavier vignette, maybe even 15% distortion as their signature innovation LOL You would only get one if you are daily high end wedding pro or a dentist.I’m not sure what Nikons issue is with releasing telescope size primes, but the canon is 7 years old now. Maybe it will give Sony a kick up the ass to make their own
That's irrelevant, unless you're running both systems. It's lighter than the Canon and nikon equivalents.
Just answering @snerkler 's questionThat's irrelevant, unless you're running both systems.![]()
Where have you seen the bad fringing? I've watched a couple of YT videos now and there's nothing mentioned except for very minor LoCAWatched most the reviews earlier today.
Was smaller and lighter than both the Nikon and canon versions.
The trade of seems to be bad purple fringing at 1.2.
Kills it for me.

I’ve seen the press release from OM. It’s an ugly thing, and that’s coming from an Olympus fan! If I recall, though I’ve binned the press release, it’s aroung 380 grams, but I could be mistaken.Anyone seen the release of the OM PEN, how is it basically the same size and weight of an A7C?
I kind of wanted to replace my A7C with a A7V and maybe get something smaller still for taking everywhere to replace my RX100 but with better controls and quality.
The dimensions are fractionally bigger I believe, but the weight is quite a bit less, over 100g less. The issue with going smaller is it becomes less ergonomic to hold.Anyone seen the release of the OM PEN, how is it basically the same size and weight of an A7C?

This one shows it, not sure what the other one I watched was, there were two that showed it and another one that said said he was getting a number of af misses in real world use.. he is a wedding photographer that uses a 50/1.2 as his main so said could be because he isn’t used to 85 or the lens. His stuff is more real use not shooting test charts or dummies (most were still in focus just less hits than his Sony 50)Where have you seen the bad fringing? I quite like the look of the silver one.I’ve seen the press release from OM. It’s an ugly thing, and that’s coming from an Olympus fan! If I recall, though I’ve binned the press release, it’s aroung 380 grams, but I could be mistaken.
I don't think that looks that bad, easily corrected in post. I prefer the black. It’s the great blank area on the front which I dislike.I quite like the look of the silver one.
Looks worse than my 50/2 Viltrox and as bad as my Sony 85 1.8…I don't think that looks that bad, easily corrected in post. YMMV![]()
I think for me it's more of a case I'm not willing to spend £1300 on a lens that I'll barely use. My 85mm f1.4 is my least used lens. It will be interesting to see how it compares in the real world as I've never had an issue with CA's on my f1.4 so if the f1.2 is similar I really can't see it being an issue in the real world. I haven't taken many backlit shots but I have taken pics of cars and bikes with plenty of chrome which is where I tend to see it the most.Looks worse than my 50/2 Viltrox and as bad as my Sony 85 1.8…
I’m not spending £1300 on a lens and then having to struggle with purple LoCal in back lit or highlighted shots.
Might just be me though.
My favourite 85 was my Nikon 1.4G and its was a b*tch at times with fringing. The Sony 1.8 is the same and why I got rid.
even in LR you would end up with a colourless muddy edge or being forced to go monochrome.
Seems to have a decent bokeh
LoCA while present doesn't seem all that bad to me
One day I'll own one i think but that day might be far away depending on how quickly they show up in used market and at good prices
Vignetting has become part of the charm nowApart from that and some vignetting it looks excellent to me.
To compare this with 1.4 ART DN, this has proper focus motor vs STM abomination that should have never been invented, almost zero distortion vs heavy requiring profile correction use, only minor vignetting.
That one is STM. Sigma had a low phase of using STM motors after HSM which were fine if not perfectly quiet for video, and before the new HLA linear motors.Does the Sigma 85mm 1.4 ART DN not still use a stepping motor?
I like a vignette, I think it gives subjects more pop.Vignetting has become part of the charm now
Most/all of these fast primes have vignetting
You can add one in post, even after cropping.I like a vignette, I think it gives subjects more pop.

Same thing happened at Nikon, except they are just only now starting to use linear motors with gen II updates of their key zooms. Pretty much why I never bought into Z8.

You can, and I often do. Also, it's not hard to remove if you don't like itYou can add one in post, even after cropping.
