No
£90 per hour :shake: That's what I just got charged.... What would you pay for fixing a car?

Audi charge £115 here

Nowhere near that is the simple answer  I always use the garage in my village, I drop the car of to them in the morning and they call me when it's ready, If I need them too they come and get it then bring it back to me (y) generally labour costs come in at about 30-40/hr (y) though they have done many jobs for free for me over the years, hence why they do all my car work (y)

Matt

I thik it depends on the car?

For £90 per hour I'd say your in mass market dealer territory, you can double that with some of the prestige marques.

Now, you might think that £90 quid per hour is excessive, but when you break down all the costs incurred in running a main dealership it's usually around 2 to 3 quid profit per hour.

Compare the cost per hour against some other trades and it's pretty reasonable, try paying a barrister or even a standard lawyer

Indeed many people conveniently forget little things like overheads (y) I used to suffer from that one every single time the treasury put 1p on a pint of beer yet as a bar manager I had to put 5 pence on the pint, as that 1p became 1.5p by the time it left the brewery, 3p by the time it was at a distributor and 5p by the time it reached me :bang: and of course the original 1p was based on an average, the premium beers actually went up closer to 2 pence from the get go :bang:

No doubt someone is on a mechanics forum questioning a photographer charging £600 day rates, or £18000 to shoot a wedding....

there is probably far more equipment costs and running costs in spannering cars than taking pictures

Trouble is, there are loads of unqualified people who think they can simply buy a set of spanners and it makes them a mechanic.

Oh....wait.......

cars have gone way beyond mechanics now
what photographer would give up a days pay at 600 quid to spend all day trying to fix his car that the garage would fix for £90

  So I brought this stethoscope and leather bag at the car boot this weekend, I think I'm going to start checking peoples vitals, but only at weekends :D In the week I'll carry on with my day job, I've got my first physical booked, it's okay she knows I'm only and amateur and still learning, it's okay I'm only doing it to cover my costs and besides it's all experience right ;)

I charge a fair bit more than that for taking photos, and my girlfriend is charged out at much more for sorting out people's tax accounts.

You pay for the knowledge and service, not the overheads. I wouldn't have a clue how to fix the car, so pay someone who does, the going rate. Which in our case, is pretty similar to what you just paid I think.

 Cue Matt emptying a bag full of vital organs over the floor. " What do you think of my Portfolio? " :D

What car do you own, mechanics seen to be a dying breed, their called fitters now. Old part off new on seems to be the order of the day. It's a shame because a good mechanic is worth his weight in gold to a garage ;-)

I pay about 250 for the minor service and 400 for the major on alternate years, but mine's older than yours and I think has a different servicing schedule.

The indie I use charges £65/h for repairs. Won't give it to the main dealer after they told me I needed a new clutch and RMS at 55k, for about £1500 - I declined. The clutch lasted to 98k and when it came out the RMS was absolutely fine.

The place I use for the VW T25 charges about £50/h, normal garage but they do a lot of Volkswagen vans.

I dont trust main dealers either tbh mark.

Main dealers are often expensive monkeys. I use an independent who charges about £40 an hour.

to be honest im not even sure what my places labour charge is, they give me the total amount of the work to be done and i say yay or nay. i think its £70/hour, its an independant VAG specialist.

Is vag short for anything to do with womens lady garden

to be fair even I would question £18,000 to shoot a wedding. A lot of weddings don't cost that much in their entiriety.

funny you say that, when my car's fuel gauge played up (showing empty for full tank) a few weeks ago, i was told they repaired the wiring inside fuel sender unit for me.

charged me 2 hours for it, at a relatively cheap £50 per hour, i kicked up a bit of fuss for charging that much "repairing a wire". being an electronic engineer by trade, i felt i could have done that job. (but i won't know how to get at the unit)

seems like i was lucky! felt bad now :(

That is so true. But i think its a sign of the times. Everything is disposable
Not many things get built to last or get built to get fixed. You just throw it away and buy another. Shame realy.

Just something else about dealers, they will frequently have 'prime' locations, where the overheads per square foot are considerably higher than the guy in the back street/under the railway arches/in the village in the middle of nowhere. :bonk:

Not to mention prestige marques, and uber reliable marques [ie, they don't see you very often ;) ] will often charge considerably more anyway. FWIW, here in London, £90 is the lower end of the scale for dealer or specialist rates, although many will now offer 'fixed rate menu pricing' on common stuff that works out cheaper. Even those 'back street' [I dont mean that in the derogatory sense] places will generally be anything between £50 and £80, depending on location.

I do most of the work myself. Once a year the car gets a Ford £99 value service, which includes a thorough check over everything on the car, useful for anything I may miss and for piece of mind. If anything needs doing, I decline having the work done by them and do the work myself or my son does it.

you think so for 99 quid bet they put there best monkey on it
the only thing that will be done thoroughly is ticking all the boxes on the check list

My Audi A4 was poorly last week and the Audi garage wanted £140 per hour (or part thereof) to put in on a diagnostic machine to tell them what was wrong with it.
The ESP light was on together with all the brake lights and the diesel hot plug light. The problem was found to be a faulty brake sensor the part cost £8 the final bill was £99!!!

I get more frustrated at the added VAT. Bill for changing a heater motor the other day was £276.00. £190 for the part, ridiculous if you saw the part they took off, god knows where they get their prices from, as far as Im concerned if they can't produce parts of a reasonable quality they should at least only charge a reasonable price for them. My old trusty corsa never needed a new heater motor after 11.5 years and 180,000 on the clock, this ones only 4 years old with 73,000.

Labour was £40, no idea how long it took to fit the part.

But the tax man took another £46.00, now that is scandalous.
