hi, I've a 450d and looking for a long lens.Thinking of a 100-400.Mostly to photograph son playing football(semi pro)+ some wildlife. How would this lens do or would i be better with 100-200 with 1.4 or a prime.100-400 on ebay for £750 4yrs old.Would this be a good buy?

100-400 is what is found best reputed to be for wildlife and sports at the average range

Have a look hereClicky Loads of info and comparisons for you, and it does depend on which 70-200 your comparing to.

If you want to shoot wildlife, the 100-400 is the best "affordable" zoom lens you can buy. To get better IQ you would need a long prime such as the 300 f/4 OR 400 F/5.6, but then you loose flexibility.

The 100-400 might be slow for shooting football especially in artificial light

Maybe an 70-200mm 2.8 would be a much better option for football and, combined with a teleconverter, used for wildlife as well.

TC's and the 70-200mm aren't a good combination, they slow the autofocus down considerably and especially the 2x TC, it also degrades image quality.

The 70-200mm f2.8 will be fast enough on it's own for football, however, it will depend on how close to the action your allowed to get. Light conditions are usually a major factor and although the 100-400mm has the range, not sure it will handle the light conditions very well especially under floodlight conditions because it not a quick lens and the ISO performance of the 450D isn't good enough to whack the ISO up higher than 800 to help things.

Wildlife the 100-400mm will be more usable, where as the 70-200mm, even with a TC will be too short, wildlife you'll really need 300/400mm + although it does depend how serious you are, birds in the garden, and the 70-200mm + TC will probably do.

If you can hire either lens, that would help in your decision before you outlay the $$$$

Which position on the footie pitch does your son play? If its up front then a 70-200mm would get you to the edge of the penaltybox reasonably well. If its midfield then you would need extra reach.
