You know when people post images as 100% crops to show lens clarity/detail, how do you actually do the 100% crop so it appears full-size when you post it in a thread?

I feel like a proper dunce asking this... :)

If you view a 12Mp photo on your monitor then the actual photo size will be about 4 or 5 times bigger than your monitor so you'll be viewing the image at about 20-25% of it's actual size. If you zoom in to 100% then you'll see a smaller portion of the image. Crop the image at this size and save the crop and you'll have the result you are after.

Does it not have to be 800 x 600? Tried following an online tutorial for a PC (I'm on a mac) and the guy says go to the marquee tool > set the mode to fixed (fixed ratio on a mac) > set width to 800 and height to 600 > and then crop in. However, the bounding box (the walking ants) just goes around the whole image rather than cropping a portion of the image.

I'm working from a processed NEF raw image set to 23mp in CS2 - should I be setting to the resolution of the camera (a D200), which is 10mp? If I zoom in to 100% and then crop, and then resize to 800x600 that should be okay shouldn't it?

Been using Photoshop since 1995 and never before has this ever cropped up for me to know. Shows that you learn something all the time...

In PS or Elements, I zoom in to 100% with the grid turned on (with pixels selected as the unit of measurement) then crop to whatever pixel size is allowed (I tend to crop to 600 as the longest side for elsewhere). Tick the 'Snap' option under 'View' and you should be able to get the crop you're after. Of course, when it comes to saving, you sometimes need to save at a Jpeg compression that hides that sharpness that you were trying to demonstrate!
