Yes
I am thinking of this lens - but not specifically for the macro functions.

It focuses close for tight environs - I shoot indoors a fair bit
It has VR for low light - and without flash outside

and apparently its really sharp.

Are there any other lenses I should put on the shopping list ?.

VR won't really help you in low light, as the slower shutter speed will still capture movement ghosting. For indoors, optimally you want 1.4, i.e. 85/1.4, or 35/2 at a stretch (Nikon, please make a 24/1.4).

Lenses depend entirely on what you plan to shoot, the more info you share, the more relevant the replies will be :)

VR will help you in low light - if you're shooting static subjects. It doesn't help for macro work though. It makes a great portrait lens for example.

Thanks. I have a 35 f2 and its one of my favorites. I have an 85 Canon which has the same problem for me that the nikon would cause - 3 ft min focus.

Food shots for the indoor stuff and portraiture in and outdoors. The D700 is a help as its looking clean up to 6400 so that means getting close shots in the kitchen is easier.

The space and time means that getting a tripod is hard and I do prefer natural light. The VR should help a little with shake hand holding.

And the fact that it will be used on a D700 means that f:2.8 shold be plenty fast enough.

I've heard the the 105mm VR is a cracking lens. You may want to think about the Nikkor 105mm f:2 AF-DC, a reach peach of a lens. Other that that the two 85mm lenses would be the nearest primes to look at.

VR is useless for macro.

Buy a shorter macro lens, a 60mm for example is easier to handhold than a 105mm.

105mm may be too long indoors anyhow, at least with a shorter lens you can get in closer. With a longer lens you may not be able to back up, which may be important.

Based on what you've told us so far, this isn't the lens you need.

Also no matter how good the optics (and the 105mm VR is very good), shooting macro handheld is never a good idea - you may get a lucky sharp shot, but ideally you DO need to be on a tripod.

Bu the OP has said that he/she's not looking at this for its macro capabilities.

105 is long in tight spaces regardless of macro capabilities.

I'd toss a straight 50 in the suggestion box, unless macro is needed too.

An alternative for portrait/macro at a slightly shorter focal length is the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 lens. A Nikon 85mm prime would be a good choice for anything other than macro shots too.

Thats a good choice. The sigma and the nikon focus down to about that length which is nice. Missing the VR for handholding shots and both are quite big and heavy are the only downsides.
