I used to handhold mine for hours at a time, these days a shoulder issue has stopped that.
A sigma 105mm cp filter is about £150. Wouldnt bother with a uv, the hood is the size of a bucket.

Damn, and here is me shooting for 10+ years without one.
Care to share why it's essential?

scottthehat said:What is it essential for degrading . A lens hood is plenty enough protection and does not degrade quality.
Protection from what.

Ha ha . Lenses can take a lot more stick than you think.

A cow licked my old Soligor 17/3.5 last year too, but again it was no prob.A UV filter is essential for all lenses
I loved my 120-300mm F2.8 - a superb lens.
Sadly a shoulder injury stopped me from using it - and now I am more attached to a tripod I decided a canon 300mm F2.8 was the way forward. Found it quite hard getting a UV filter to protect the front element though. What an oversight by Canon.
mortimerhill said:No oversight. The front element is a piece of flat glass and effectively a protective filter

odd jim said:No it's not!

i have used a cp, not grads, and when you use a filter for a specific job thats part and parcel of knowing that its for a specific job, but saying a uv filter is essential for all lenses is crud.out of interest do you ever use a CP or grads etc?
