Hi all, i recently orderd my first camera (a Fujifilm S1500), and a 16 gig memeory card to go with it. Its a 10 Megapixel camera, and im just wondering, roughly, how many photo's im going to get out of my SD card.

Will one 16 gig be enough?

shed loads - more then enough but it is putting all your eggs in one basket - you'd be better with 2 x 8 gig

16 gig is more than enough. You'll be able to get about 1000 odd photos on there or probably a lot more if you shoot JPEG. Personally, I prefer a few smaller sized cards so if something goes wrong, I don't lose all my photos at once.

All my cards are 4 gig because a DVD holds 4.7 gig and I use dvd's for backups

I don't think I've ever managed to fill a card with my S1500, and my cards are only 2GB.

Great camera, hope you enjoy it.

Im sure i will, i cant wait to get out there and start taking some photos!

My biggest worry about image space is that im going to south africa in a few weeks, to do a little work on a game reserve, and im hoping to photograph some wildlife in my free time. Im sure 1000 pics is enough for me though, im not likley to exeed that in two weeks.

Make sure you take a few sets of batteries.

16GB will be more than enough, for day to day stuff, but 1000 shots for 2 weeks in South Africa. Your going to a game reserve, I bet you'll shoot a LOT more than that.

As for not using more than 4GB for safety if a card fails well yes, but they used to say get 2 x 1GB for safety over a 2GB card. In years to come it will be get 2 x 1TB cards over a single 2TB card.

I'd love to swap my 4 x 1GB cards for 1 x 4GB now I've upgraded to a larger mega-pixel camera.

The thing is memory is so cheap nowadays why don't you? You can get a 4gb sandisk extreme III for under £20....

I got my 16 gig for under that!!

And whiteflyer, remember that i wont have a lot of time to be shooting, a couple of mornings (possiblity of free time), one or two afternoons(again possible free time), and one night drive(certainty). The rest of the time i will be working, its a very busy time for the reserves over there. So im confident ill have enough space with 1000 shots.

I've got a S1000fd 10M with a Sandisk 8GB card and it says I can take 1545 full sized pics on it.

I bought a set of Maplin own brand high capacity rechargable batteries for it and they are the bees knees.

The size of a S1500 RAW file is about 5MB, so you could expect to get around 3000 images on a 16GB card, it may be a little more or a little less depending on the subject matter.

I have a couple of cheap 8GB cards but tend to only use them in emergencies (like rarely) I tend to use 4GB Sandisk Extreme IIIs in both CF and SD in my 1Ds3 and 1D3.

I never considerd what i would do if my card were to fail in some way, i guess for now ill just have to hope it wont.

Unfortunately, hoping that a card won't fail is about as much good as praying that your partner won't get pregnant even though you went bareback for a couple of months. Not only that but when a card does fail, it'll be when a shoot is unrepeatable.

IMO, 16 gig should be plenty but I'm another who would suggest a few 4 GB cards rather than one 16GB one. I would also suggest that after each session, the images on the card(s) should be uploaded to a computer and ideally backed up to DVD or CD (take a small stock of a brand you trust completely and store them out of the light, just in case) as well.

I'm going to chime in with another + for not putting all your eggs in the same basket. I've never used higher than 4gb per card and it works out well for me. 16 gb should be way plenty for even a holiday of shooting. I think I shoot about 12gb with my g10 on a typical trip using an 8gb card plus smaller cards or backing up via laptop/desktop depending where I am.

If you already have the 16gb card then cool.. it's just risky.

I have an 8 gig card that for some reason is now showing as USBC(little zero)N(with a ~above it)!e(with `above it.

And I cant open it (:0() USE A FEW 4 GIG STICKS there cheap and as others have said easy to back up to DVD

I'd love to hear what size some of the Sport tog use (Tony (Kipax) and Gary) where the action is non stop. Personal I do Track and Field were the first event is at 11am and then it's non stop till 5.pm.

I did a canoeing event at weekend, the competitors set off 60 seconds apart, not sure when I'm supposed to keep changing the 4GB cards when shooting 25mb RAW files in busts mode.

My point is it's easy to say use little cards and keep changing when doing landscapes or portraits, but for sports and wild life, you don't want to miss the killer shot because your changing cards.

I'd like to see some real hard statical data on card fails, are Sandisc and Lexar really that much better than other cards.(I do only use Sandisc and Lexar myself) or do those companies just have huge marketing budgets to spin the myth they are so much better.

I would prefer 4 x 4Gb cards then if something goes wrong you haven't lost everything.
