Stupid question I think but I'll ask anyway, will my old Kit Lens Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 non IS Clicky linky be any use with a 7D, people say its a carp lens but I think its OK, Im thinking if I can save on having to buy a new one I can afford some good glass as well

I know it'll fit and work LOL, but whats the quality going to be like I was wondering, and would I need to get a different lens in the end anyway ?
 
Should be fine if you stop down to F8-F11
Wide open, as Michael said, the lens would be doing the camera an injustice.
 
If you will be able to save up for better glass, it will be a stopgap. However, in the long term it's wasted on a 7D, and if you won't have the funds to upgrade in the near future I'd suggest getting a 60D instead, leaving more money for a better lens.
 
Perhaps its worth selling the non is and buying the is version, theirs only 20-30 pounds diffrence second hand and its rated a lot more highly, may help till you can afford the more expensive lens.
 
Thanks guys would be an injustice, guess thats what I thought,

its just if it would, I could get a 70-200mm L F4 as well, and the sigma 105 macro as well, I have a nifty fifty so could use that I suppose,

I'll have to have a re think, but I deffo want the 7D so what lens £300-£400, I could get the canon 7D and 18-135 IS as a kit

on my list so far

and I already have Sigma 150-500mm

Ive had a quick play with that lens on a 550D and while i cant really comment on its IQ i did find its focal range great without the lens being too bulky to have as a comfterable walk around lens.

If its not bang goes the L, c'est la vie 70-200mm F4

Or thinkin to get the7D and kit 18-135mm all I can afford

I dont want to try then find out I need a better lens, as its took 18months to save £2000

so thats my budget or less :lol:

The 18-135 IS lens is a cracker - I use it on my 50D as a 'do everything' walkabout lens, and the odd bit of sport.

Great IS and AF (though its not USM but its good enough), uses UD glass so its good for high MP sensors and is a very good all rounder IMO. My only criticism would be the barrel distortion at 18mm, though that isn't unusual for a superzoom and can be corrected in DPP.

What's your favourite subject, is a constant aperture lens something that would be useful? The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VC lens is very capable and can be had for around £200 second hand. Obviously a shorter focal length and no IS though, and the IS (VC) version isn't as sharp.
 
The 15-85 is a lovely lens, I got mine bundled with the 7d, thinking that if I didn't get on with it I'd revert to my original plan of 17-40L, 70-200L f4 IS and the nifty 50 and a couple of steps forward/back for the bit in-between until I could afford a 24-105L.

Reason for going for the EF lenses being I wanted a solution that worked with my EOS-3 film camera as well :shrug:

To be honest, the 17-40 seems a wee bit sharper, though obviously, it's limited in reach either end compared to the 15-85, and the weather-sealing is a serious bonus in the great british outdoors, but as an all-round lens, the 15-85 is a little smasher and I guess I'll be keeping it and using the nifty-50 until I've saved up again :)

Just wish I'd been able to get out recently and give it a proper workout :(
 
I've spoken to Dave about his dilemma, and I just don't think he'll get the benefits of the upgrade to a 7d with the old kit lens. I always thought is was fine on my 30D and much better than most said, but my dad bought a 50D and like Dave need a lens until funds allowed a lens purchase.

He used my kit lens on the 50D and it was terrible, I really think it's just not up to the job with newer more mega-pixel cameras.

When dad had the fund he got to the choice of either the 15-85, or 24-105 L, now all the reviews I've read of the 15-85 say it a stunner of a lens and well worth buying. Remember this is the 15-85 not the 17-85 we are taking about.

Now seeing as Dad is over 80 and doesn't need to save money for later in life like us youngsters, he took the plunge and got the 24-105 L.

I posted this before our chat Mark, I was the hankering after an L lens, so trying to cut corners

Mark (TBY) I'll try to stretch to the 15-85, but dont think I can, if I could I think to be honest a new tripod would be better for me really as the one I have Ive had for 25yrs so its old LOL thanks for all your help :thumbs:
 
Drop the Sigma macro and get extension tubes for the 70-200L. That's what I use, quality is high and the versatility of the zoom makes it a better choice than either of the two macros I had previously. For me anyway.

It'll certainly keep you going, possibly permanently, and then you can afford to upgrade the old kit zoom :) For many folks the standard range zoom is the lens they use most, and should therefore be as good as you can possibly make it. That usually means 17-55 2.8, or 15-85 if you can live with lower f/number.
 
my old kit lens, bought years ago on a 350D is now a paperweight in the wifes office.
even on the 350, a better lens made a world of difference.
if your upgrading to a &, do it justice with a quality lens.
check out Sigma's range, if your on a budget.
the top end of their range ( the EX's). are excelent lenses, at a lot less than Canon cash.
