Yes
Just brought a 1d mk2 and cannot get either Vista or XP to 'see' the camera. Tried two different firewire cables two different OS on two different PC's and no joy.
Checked Cfn to make sure there isn't an option to turn firewire port off.
Used original software and latest software from Canon website.
Have I missed anything?
Any help would be appreciated.
Nick
USB port on camera works btw.

Latest firmware on camera.

When you say 'Used original software and latest software from Canon website' is that on the camera (firmware) or on the PC (EOS utility)?

camera switched on?

If you have discounted the computer (sorry can't help there as I use OSX, is there an additional driver you install??) and leads then next place to look is the firewire port on the camera, they were a bit fragile and didn't last that long if used for tethering frequently.

The MkII's did have a problem with FireWire ports often becoming US after a period of time - looks like this may've happened to yours. Options are using an external card reader, connecting camera by USB or sending off to Canon Repair Centre to have it fixed.

From memory the cost is in the region of £140

Thanks David, the vendor has offered to return camera to Canonn for full service which is very good except that I will be without camera until its returned!

Can I ask what yopu intend to use the firewire port for?
ASIUI its only for changing settings inside the camera, namely the Personal functions and tehering. Card images come to the PC via the USB port which tbh is far too slow and you'd be better off with a card reader.

Yes Matt, I would want to customise the Pfn and if I ever wanted to shoot Tethered I won't be able to unless i get the port repaired. I paid a fair amount for the camera, don't want to be paying more for repairs straight away.!

there is a firewire driver on canon usa's site too.

i never got my mk2s to work tethered

as i understand it they only work with an obsolete version of the firewire std so a modern pc won't work

neither will the usb for other than uploading

let me know if you get it to work though!

my mk2n worked fine with my vista laptop (well once the port was repaired on the camera!)

USB port works, recognised as a Canon 1D mk2 by XP on a desktop and Vista on a laptop.
When connected by firewire neither system will even acknowledge there is anything connected.
Euan, thanks will have a try with that driver.

then why not just use the USB don't think there be much difference.
USB 2.0 is a 480 Mbps interface and FireWire is a 400 Mbps interface

It's not USB 2, and you need the firewire for tethered shooting and changing preferences etc.

I've never got the FW working on mine easier, but wasn't really that fussed about it at the time. I didn't realise it was needed for tethered shooting, will have to look at setting it up again.

I have just changed the name in my 1dsmk2 I connected through the fire wire cable onto a pcmcia cardbusthen into the lappy. then i turned the camera on ." not all the way up but just onto the on setting" this then opened up the preferences for me to change the name ..

Might not help but its what i have just done as the usb cable would not give me the options i needed.

Ps mine now works tethered also .. neat . i like it
