I've had this idea for a while. I'm thinking about taking a year long 'portrait' of my local town - the people - the way they live and work and play, events, the way the place looks etc throughout 2010 - seems like a nice 'landmark' year - I didn't get round to it in 2000 - so this seems like the next best date. Pictures that will be interesting now but even more interesting in 50 years time. The local museum are interested in archiving the pictures - but so far no funding - so this is a private self financed project at the moment - if it goes ahead. Final outcome maybe a book or an exhibition - I don't know.

What do you folks think of the idea of the project? Anyone else interested in doing something similar in their town? Might be interesting if lots of people took part from all over the country?

Thoughts? Thanks!

I think it's a really good idea...

Good luck with it! I look forward to seeing the results :)

:plusone:

Would it be a daily thing... or just doing things as and when they happen?

I'd love to do it in my town - but I don't like 95% of the people who live in my immediate surrounds! :shake:

Couldn't be daily - I don't have time for that - I would be when ever I could - or when I heard of something interesting happening - there are several 'landmark' events every year too which would be covered. I might set up a website to invite people to 'apply' to be photographed - and to show the results. I don't know yet - all ideas welcome!

Thought there might be more interest in this - maybe not such a good idea after all? :(

I think it's a good idea - maybe you could split it down into categories:

1. Landmark events (I'm guessing you mean fetes / fairs etc)
2. Landmarks - historic buidings v's regeneration
3. Personalities - backbones of the community / new generations / people in power / Local groups etc
4. Natural beauty & Wildlife in the town
5. Everything else!

I'm sure you get the idea...

I am thinking of doing something similar in my local town, take photos through out the year of the town, the way it changes (its going through a lot at the moment, shops shutting down etc).

Then in a year either upload to a website or maybe DVDs/USB HDD and time capsule it in the middle of the secondary schools field so it can be found in the future :)

I feel it's a great idea on a personal level but unfortunately, how could you compete with the togs who work for the local rag? They attend virtually anything and everything that happens around the town and have the inside knowledge to get to unplanned events quicker .. with a press pass to boot.

But press togs attend, they take photos of the event and once its been in the paper its forgotten about, they also rarely just take pics of the area to show development etc and general people portraits etc. When things change gradually you don't notice, but if you show someone an image of a town centre from now, and what it looked like a year ago you will usually see quite a few changes.

I find you never look at your own town like you do someone else's. Tough challenge and a great idea so good luck if you take it on ;) You could try the local council for some sort of backing or local news papers.

Personally I reckon that is an excellent idea Andrew...

Surely the only 'real' cost though, aside from the practical stuff when you come to print/mount and exhibit, is a time related thing...

Following a conversation with our local newsagent and Chair of the local commercial group I did start this in our village a year or so back... ...ended up, before giving up, being a seasonal type record more than anything else as nothing much goes on in our quaint little village... ...aside form the constant bickering between landlord and tenants in our never changing and half-empty 'high street'...

Good luck with your venture and with generating funding... ...it will be good to follow progress... ;)

:p

I like the idea too Andrew. :)

If I were to do something like this I'd also include people at work, without an economy you often end up with the empty premises that Ven pointed out.

ah ha! Well I freelance for the local paper a lot - so that wouldn't be a problem. I covered a lot of local events this year anyway which is maybe what started the idea.

yep - I'd certainly want to do people at work and play - as these things are likely to change over the next 50 - 100 years - so hopefully the pictures would become more interesting as time goes by.

The only real cost is my time - until I get to the stage of exhibiting or doing something else with the pics. The museum will archive them for the future at their expense.

I live in a village and I started doing a project like this in 2007, mainly documenting the changes in the infrastructure, or taking modern versions of old last century viewpoints around the village. I have lived in the village for 60 years, so have seen a lot of changes myself.

A local historian published a book 3 years ago which contained loads of pictures of the village going back over 100 years, the latest picture was taken in the 1980's and a lot has changed since then, so I thought it a great project to do a modern day snapshot of the village.

I keep revisiting the same places at different times of the year so I can get an alternative and maybe a better image of that location.

The local village primary school could have been a problem area, but I approached the head teacher and sought permission to photograph it one weekend, which was readily granted. I carried the head's reply with me in case anybody queried what I was doing. people can be very touchy around schools, even at weekends.

Reading the historian's book (which I received as a 60th birthday present) I discovered a lot about the village that I was unaware of and gave me much more scope for pictures, even if one was only a very old postbox.

Even if this personal project comes to nothing, I will have learnt a lot about the place I live in, and it gives me a reason to go out picture taking.

John :)

nice post John - interesting reading.
