20D "feature" check

Can some 20D, 30D, 40D etc owners confirm something for me please?

1 Put the camera into Av mode.
2 Ensure the C.Fn that controls sync speed in Av mode is set to Auto.
3 Attach a flash (I've tried this with 580 and 580II).
4 Put the flash in E-TTL mode
5 The shutter speed will fluctuate to match the aperture and ambient exposure as you'd expect.
5 Now change the flash to Manual mode (camera still in Av)
6 What does the shutter speed do?

On my 20D and D60, Av mode + manual flash locks the shutter speed to max sync speed.

However, on a 1D mkIII this doesn't happen and I'm free to manually fill flash without the camera adjusting the ambient combination.

Is this a "feature" or am I just going nuts?

Thanks

I may be mis-reading what you're looking for here but one thing that seems to be missed in your instructions is setting the flash to HSS when you're using it in manual on older bodies.

6. It fluctuates to match the ambient, as it should in Av.

That's what it does on my 5D2 and as far as I recall on my old 40D. I think this is standard Canon procedure.

I have a feeling Nikon is different in aperture-priority with flash...

Thanks guys sounds like it is a "feature" as suspected. 5D2 would be in the pro range so that would make sense that it works the same as a 1D.

I guess there's a split in the functionality somewhere in the line-up.
