24-70 on a 7D??

Here's my predicament:

I currently own a
7D
15-85
70-200L
50 1.8
100 2.8

Im looking at a new lens for my set up (are we ever not!! :D.
At the minute i shoot lots....i've done one wedding with hopes of more...one corporate event...lots of family portraits and random/ walk around photography... i enjoy landscapes (so pretty much everything)
I love using my primes....i always find myself back on my 50mm!!!

I've been contemplating the 24-70 L or a prime L (24, 35)......In the next 12 months i hope to get a 5D ii.

How does the 24-70 do on a cropped 7D??? I think i'd struggle with it at the wide end? But when i get a 5D it'll be spot on?

I know the 17-55 2.8 is an option but im thinking about the future and the 5D???

Anyone have this combo??

Hi Dan. I have this combo and use it a lot for walkabout and landscape stuff ( I hope with a fair degree of success). I too have a nod to the future and want to get a 5DII to complement my 7D, so the 24-70 purchase was a no brainer :thumbs:

I know exactly where you're coming from. I have a 17-55 on loan from a good friend (he has a 5D so not much use to him) and it makes a really good walkabout lens on the 7D. The lens is good enough to stand the pixel peeping demons on that sensor...

But.... I have tried the 24-70 and the 24-105 and I honestly think the 17-55 is a beter focal length range for a crop sensor (in fact it's very similar to a 24-70 on FF).

So, when do expect to purchase the 5D2, and will it replace the 7D or is it in addition ?? I ask those questions as they are the things you really need to think about. You may want to consider the 17-40, but that's still only f4, so what are you going to use it for ?

Also, you have the 15-85, and whilst the 17-55 is a better lens, you do have the narrow end covered, so maybe the 24-70 will work for you (unless you were thinking of selling the 15-85 to support your next lens purchase).

I don't really think I've helped much have I ? :thinking:

Do you need 2.8 IS at 17mm ? If not then go for the 24-70. If you do, then the answer is clear(ish) :lol:

I'll be keeping the 7D and having 2 bodies.....i am hoping by the end of next summer i might have skrimped enough mullar to purchase a 5D...so it would be less than 12 months if i bought a 17-55.
It will be my main wedding lens (if things take off??)....i'd be looking to sell the 15-85 to help fund a new lens (it would be great to keep the 15-85 for the wide end but havent got the pennies)
I have looked at the 17-40 but would prefer a lower apperture for my low light shooting. also the 16-35 (2.8)????

Yes - the equivalent field of view of 38mm-112mm on a full frame. (although strictly speaking it really is 38.4-112 ;)). The lens itself doesn't magically change focal lengths depending on which camera it is placed on.

Yep

It's getting kind of narrow on a 1.6 so it depends on what you shoot I guess.

As I tend to do a lot of landscapes I found 24mm a bit retrisctive even on a 1.3 crop.
 
I'd pick up a 17-55 off the classifieds here, then sell it on next year when you get the 5D2 - As you probably then won't be using your 7D as a walkabout I guess once you've got the full frame. You'll not loose many ££'s buying second hand and reselling. The 17-55 holds it's value well.
 
I think you should get clarity on your chosen format first. If it's full frame, get the 5D2 and then base your lens choices on that, and fit the 7D around it.

Trying to work two formats together is difficult. The same lenses behave very differently on each camera, and you need to either prioritise on one format, or run the two for different things - eg 5D2 for portaits and landscape, 7D for action and long lens stuff.

I think you'll find that trying to double-guess the future, before you've actually got the cameras and start using them, could lead to costly mistakes.
