24-70mm F2.8 - Sigma or Tamron?

Afternoon all.

Started looking into purchasing a new lens. I'm looking for a generic lens for portraits and family events.

Thinking of 24-70mm F2.8 and noticed that Tamron and Sigma have lenses that match (and similar prices).

Anyone out there able to provide a comparison?

Also, the Sigma lens is labelled as a macro lens - I'm
guessing that it's not really a true macro lens?

Cheers.

there has been many threads on this!

the sigma is not a true macro lens and is much bigger and heavier than the tamron.

i'm looking to get the tamron over it, from reading reviews it seems to be the one to go for.

A lot of the reviews I've read on the Tamron say it's soft at the edges.

On a Nikon D700 the Tamron (which is a 28-75 btw) is the much better lens.

My Tamron 28-75 is definitely soft at the edges wide open but close it down a bit and it's lovely and sharp all over.

I do like this lens and am pretty pleased with the results although given the opportunity to get the Nikon 24-70 over this, I'd definitely go down the Nikon route. I'd certainly go with Tamron over Sigma as in my personal experience, no Sigma lenses I've had have been that great where as the two Tamron lenses have been excellent for the money - they're not perfect, they're very good.
