Yes
Guys,

If I want to burn for example 100MB of data to a DVD, using the built in burner and OSX software, it takes around 10 minutes. It also has a failure rate of at least 20% (discs no longer usable after a fail).

Is there software which is better which will allow me to determine if its my drive or the DVD's which are crap?

Not sure what to trial...

Gary.

not wanting to scare you but this happened to me a while back on my 24" and the hard drive failed and since it has been replaced it is fine...

and yes i do mean the hard drive, the dvd drive is and always has been fine..!

Cheers,

Not worried, all my data is backed up across four gazillion drives. I'm gonna take it back under warranty soon as the screen has developed folds and ripples in the top right corner.

Apart from the burning issue, are you happy with the iMac 27. I have been thinking of getting one to replace my Windows 64bit system

It is possible that it's closing the disc, which can take time especially if you are using a DVD as there's oodles of space left. I think it has to do this to make it more compatible with set top players etc. Can't remember fully.

10 mins does seem a little long though. Have you tried www.download.com and looking for a free burner to see if it's the software or drive? The failure rate could indicate the drive but then crappy dics do fail a lot. Verbatim are bullet proof and most commonly used for proofs in the film industry and I've also used Fujifilm UV ones which have been 100% so far.

I don't think it should take so long to burn a disc.

I find that the built in OSX burning software works just fine, although I sometimes use Toast Titanium.

I would try and find a different brand of disc to see if your Mac likes it any better.

Verbatim do inkjet printable discs also, worth having a look as they really are top stuff.

Also, do you have error checking on? I normally don't bother and just stick it in the set top machine and test!

I use Toast also for burning CDs?DVDs

would it not be better you using CDs for 100MB of data over DVDs?

I've heard Toast is good. I'm assuming it's DVD presentations which although can be done via VCD, it would probably be better on DVD for compatibiliy etc?

Dunno how to tweak ANY options on OSX. I know how to burn, but no idea if I can change how it burns...

It could be error checking as well, which could take a while. I'd grab a copy of Toast, or at least a trial version to see if it works any better.

I was going to ask is it verifying the discs which will double the time. However the 20% scrap rate is high mine is less than 1%, however I di buy some cheap ones which did cause a few problems, I needed to clean the writer with a cleaning disc & only buy quality makes now like Verbatim, TDK & 3m. My 27in definitely doesnt like the Infinity DL-DVDs

If this if for clients, why bother with PITA DVD's at all these days? Just give customers a USB flash drive, and even have them personalised with company name/logo..... DVD's will be going the way of floppy discs sooner rather than later.

Does that include the cost of the nice case? I'd still go with DVD's over USB at the moment as it gives people the option of using both a computer or their DVD player on their nice big plasma!

Yup, total cost inc the nice case is approx £1.55. That's why I use the nice case, the Jewel Cases which were **** were costing me more after I printed the almost 12x8 sleeves.
