28-70 0r 24-70?

I have a 28-70mm - should I keep it and just be happy - or trade up (?) to a 24-70mm? Anyone used both care to comment?
 
Andy (puddleduck) is the man to ask on this front ;)

He has / had and used both so will be able to give a good comparitive answer
 
For what I shoot I prefer the 28-70 - wide on the 28-70 is much better for edge to edge sharpness, and the 24-70 is known for its field curvature. I don't think its worth the upgrade really but I'm coming for a landscape point of view where I find the 17-35 and 28-70 a very nice combo indeed.

The 24-70 is a smidge sharper (probably more contrast) but its very close.

Certainly I've got no complaints about the 28-70 on the D700, its critical sharp wide open, and bokeh at 70mm is very nice.

I suppose if you need to ask the question, then no, you don't need to upgrade. But I suspect the seeds are planted and you will :)
 
thanks for the views folks - I should have said NIKON lenses.
My work is mostly press/PR - sometimes I just wish for a little bit wider but I do have the 17-35 - so a lens change is sometimes possible - sometimes not. From the comments above I think I should save my money - but more comments always welcome too. thanks.

no - at this stage I really am open minded - just the thing about sometimes needing a little more at the wide end. . .
 
Not something I do, but in your shoes I'd be tempted to have a D3 with a 14-24 on, and a D3 with a 24-70 on.. ;)

But seriously, I do think there is a lot of "Emperors New Clothes" hype going on, with folks saying you MUST have a 14-24 or you MUST have a 24-70.

In the 17-35 and the 28-70 you've got a pair of damn fine lens there...
 
I changed from a 28-70mm to a 24-70mm and to be honest, it wasn't worth the move. My old 28-70mm is for sale on this forum and whoever gets it will be getting a superbly sharp lens.
The 28-70mm is built like a tank. Pure quality.

I prefer the build and handling of the 28-70 as well. The 24-70 feels like QuikSave, the 28-70 M&S :D

My 28-70 wide open isn't particularly sharp at the edges :( Can be a bit of CA too. I rarely use it though so even though most reports say the 24-70 is a tad better I don't see much point in upgrading.
 
I'm beginning to agree with you . . . now how do I keep that tax bill down?

That's good to hear I'm the new owner (Hopefully) lol!

Back on topic. From what I've read mainly on Miranda it seems the only real bonus is that the 24-70 is lighter. For the costs involved I don't think the payoff in a slight increase in sharpness is worth it!
