This may be something really simple that I am trying to do, but it's got me beat!

I have 3 images that I want to sit side by side as 1 jpeg file for the front page in my website, can anyone advise how I can do this?

That'll be a triptych - Easy enough - Open a new file and set the size of the canvas to the total size you want with all three pics. Then open the pics and move them into the new canvas with the move / drag tool.
 
Just use photoshop and extend the canvas of the first image so its large enough to accommodate the other two images. Then just drag these images onto the extended canvas area and position to your liking. Flatten the image and then save as a JPEG.
