300mm f4 + 2x TC will it AF on Nikon?

Yes it will, thats f8 and something like the D300 will AF up to f8.

Its going to be slooooow and dark though!
 
The non AF-S will AF with the Kenko 2x just fine.

The AF-S will AF with the Kenko and Nikon TC's.

I don't recommend the combo for optical reasons, only the 300mm f/2.8 VR can get away with a 2x TC and even then its a push....
 
Tried a 300 + 2x TC briefly, it focussed on a bright sunny day with a little stuttering, but the image quality was so-so. Would imagine it wouldn't focus on darker scenes.
