32 bit windows 7 to 64 bit - problem??

Recently changed from 32 bit windows 7 to 64 bit plus increased ram from 3 to 4gb and the following fault has occurred (may or maynot be associated with the following problem)

If I put a dvd or data disc in the E drive it accesses the data on it no problem - however if I put an empty disc in - message says "windows can't read the disc in E drive" and device manager says "device working perfectly"

Could it be that my dvd/cd recording device is not 64 bit compatable

Everything else is working pefectly since the change from 32 to 64
 
Does it recognise that it is a DVD writer and not just a read only drive?

A new DVD writer drive is only £15 or so if you can't get it recognised.

32/64 bit is nothing to do with it.

Glad to hear it's nothing to do with 32/64 bit - I just thought it was too much of a coincidence!
"Does it recognise that it is a DVD writer and not just a read only drive?" don't know how to check that - but at approx £15 I'll order a new writer drive
 
Are you sure your DVD writing software is properly installed?

After all, if there's nowt on the disk what do expect to be read?

When opening "Computer" lists as:- CD Drive E
 
I had the same problem, the fix is easy. The trick is to make the computer reinstall that drive as a new bit of hardware. So what you do is delete drive "E" from the computer completely .Power down the computer and make sure no main connected. Open up the computer and disconnect the unit completely including all leads to it. They should just unplug from back of unit

Power up and run the computer it should not detect that drive (as a check to make sure it isn't there). Power down and reconnect the drive. When you power up again the computer should detect that it has new hardware and install it as a DVD R-RW drive automatically.

What I kept missing was disconnecting the actual unit from the computer

Took me ages to figure out how to do it.

Thanks for the fix Bazza and pm - will try it tomorrow and let you know how I got on

With my knowledge of computers probably best to take it to my friend who has far more knowledge than me - but he couldn't diagnose the above problem - thanks again
 
Any problems then please give me a call. As I said I had exactly the same as you. Disconnecting the CD/DVD R-RW drive and reconnecting it as well as removing drive "e" from the computer as I mentioned in my last post worked for me. I won't tell you how many hours of shear frustration I had with the same problem
