Used for the first time 3D tracking on my D300 and started to go dizzy from the focal point point skipping all over the place. I read somewhere that for BIF it was a good choice. Could someone explain what it is designed for and more specifiably how to use it correctly:bang:

Thanks in advance

Dave

I read that somewhere too ... it would want to be one massive bird against an absolutely plain background :D

Try the 9 or 21 point group ... I use 9 point on the D700 and D300 for BIF stuff

Hi Martyn,
I've checked out the link from "renu", still none the wiser.:bang:
I'll have a go with 9 or 21, to see how I get on, thanks. I did see a post from Scott about 3D being good for BIF but not with busy backgrounds.
Anyways, I'll keep an eye out for some more info.

I use selective point AF (middle on the switch) with 9 or 21 as above, also remember to use AF-C (continuous) if not already plus also,,,,,i think in the menu not sure if it's a3 for focus & release settings can make a difference how that is set to focus - release i think.
I assign settings to one of the ABCD shooting banks for customised settings.

Dave there is some info here LINK

There is also a useful D3 Pro Technical Guide from Nikon LINK (same theory for the D300/D700)

Hi Graham,

Many thanks for the info, will give it a go. Nice to hear from a Sleafordian:thumbs: I was born and bred in Sleaford, still got me folks there and a few mates. Are you from Sleaford or did you move there? I wouldn't understand why anyone would do that, went back last year to visit everyone and, my, the place has changed. It's a shame I'm not still there otherwise we could maybe hook up for some sessions:)
But back to the problem in hand, thanks again.

Dave

Thanks mate,

Some useful stuff on these links. Got some reading to do:thumbs:

Great shot Scott,

Apus apus, my absolute favourite bird, just love them. But I'm no where near ready to photograph them yet, sorry enough. I'll have to practice on albatrosses and Golden Eagles for now:lol: I just came across the 3D tracking whilst genning up. I'm seem to be doing more reading than photography at the moment. But thanks to yourself and others I'm now a bit more clued up on 3D and just have to practice.

Thanks
