46.1mp Canon DSLR Previewed ?

i think its just the usual 'i can do one better' talk.....

nikon are bringing out some fancy insane spec body, not to mention talk of a mobile thats insane on picture quality..... i think this is canon just saying look at us were not being left behind....

you could well be correct ,
but i cant see canon not putting out a high mp cam after the d800 as they must of lost some sales

A camera with a 5D designation but housed in a 1D shell? Possible I suppose but for a body that will not be appearing for something like a year one assumes, it's low light handling is poorer than the top 3 Canon offerings of the 6D through to the 1Dx. I'm a tad sceptical about the specs sinceresolution apart, it should more likely to be an improvement on the 5D3 and not a step backwards.

Just my 2c you understand.

potentially.... but Canon fans generally stick to Canons, and Nikon fans generally stick to Nikons- with a few exceptions of course

its interesting that although Canon are theoreticalising about this 46.1mp monster, the general spec is relatively low... only 5fps for example... the 1d was 10fps if im not mistaken. it appears there giving a 5d body, a super full frame sensor and then the running gear of a 650d (maybe in an effort of keeping prices down to be competitive perhaps)

it looks possible to me ,i guess rather than an improvement or step back from the mk111 more a different purpose ,if you look at the way they've built the 6d its aimed at a very specific market
either way competition would be healthy

id guess that if this is true the its aimed more at studio work so fps isnt needed so much ,whereas the 1d is more sports

ive used canon slrs for over 20 years and have never thought about changing
but i am now ,iam looking for a full frame dslr and iam taking my time before deciding which way to go they both have there up side

Yes I agree Canon are revising their product lineup and who knows what is envisaged for the future. We'd still end up buying their gear anyway ;)

When are these photoshop moneys going to learn than Canon are not going to put an X on the end of every product name, or should my next lens be the EF 16-35X f2.8X MKII X USMX

Sounds like a return of the '1Ds' line by a different name.
sounds good to me!! not that it will be near my price range

there not saying thats what the name would be(or that thats the cam pictured) ,just there could well be a high mp cam on the way .i guess we shall see in a month or so

Sounds pathetic. They're just trying to one up the D800, because the 5DIII failed so bad on test sites like DXO. Nothing more. If you can't get it right with 20 odd mp, don't go cramming more muck on.

At 46mp they would better do away with bayer pattern and AA filter and get creative. 20mp is indeed the sweetspot with the current technology and plenty to get above A2 print.

16bit is indeed a very welcome change and I would personally see that as a major development - of course if they actually record full 16bit of data and not just use larger space for processing (like some or all Nikons do )

Btw Canon clearly outdid nikon with 1dx over d4 :rules::D

If you look at the source that Canon Rumours gives for the article, it says:

"ho hum, I did say take stuff on this page with a big pinch of salt :-)"

Don't worry it will happen, even if have to wait 4 years

I think a camera like this from Canon is inevitable, sooner or later.

The way it sits at the moment, the D800 has lots of pixels, arguably more than you need, and only runs at 4fps because the processing engine can't go any faster. The 5D3 has a lot less pixels, but it still has 'enough' and can run at 6fps as a result.

However, a key feature of the D800 is that you can switch to DX mode, still have 16mp (same as D7000) and get 6fps, plus the benefit of the extra crop factor reach. The two benefits (usually) go hand in glove for action photography.

We don't seem to hear much about this aspect of the D800, possibly because you need the battery grip to get the extra pace, but it's a killer feature IMHO. Makes the D800 two cameras in one.

DX mode is overrated - you can just crop to 16mp any way you like. There is some loss of IQ associated with that. 5D3 will crop to about 9mp, still plenty for an A3

i presume there no differance in iq cropping in camera or in pp ?
if that is the case theres not much point in it (for me)
i do think nikon missed a trick by not allowing for different size raw files in cam ,it would make mem cards go a lot futher

Yes you can, but the advantage of a dedicated crop mode with a mask to show the sensor area is that you can compose within those limits as you shoot.

I had the high-speed crop mode on my D2x (effectively a x2 crop) and although it knocked the MP count down to around 7mp, it was ultra-handy when I was shooting for purpose, i.e when those images would be outputted without anything other than a sharpen. Of course, shooting the full sensor then cropping gives you options as well, but a crop mode is a very useful feature that is much underrated...

You're missing the point of DX mode with the D800. You get a 50% jump in frame rate, big difference for action photography, you also get 1.5x more effective reach, almost always a bonus for sport or wildlife. And you still have 16mp to play with, or 36mp in FX mode.

With Canon, you need two cameras to do that trick, and even then you still don't get 36mp, which rightly or wrongly, is currently locked into comsumer psyche as the thing to have.

The funny thing is most canon users slated the d800 for having to high a MP count saying that 22MP was the sweet spot.
Now this may be on the table they have changed there tune..fan boys are great dont you think.

If this does come out i can see it being very expensive and higher than the 1dx , like the d3x was which is going to upset alot of people.

I haven't seen any of that (the bit I put in bold) here. Where did you see it?

And there was me thinking the megapixel war had come to an end. I've recently done a shot with my 5D3 that hangs on a 36x24 canvas in someones room and IMO the quality is perfectly good enough. I really don't think 46 megapixels will make that much difference to me, I'm more than happy with the 20 odd in the 5D3 that I've got now, and I don't envisage doing many 10 feet by 6 feet prints even if I could afford a printer that size.

Exactly

There could be a 40mp camera on the way, there could also be a 100 mp on the way as they already have the sensor, in fact you can say there could be anything on the way, guess enough crap enough times and you'll get it right a some point showing how good your source really is.

To those with older pcs/laptops, they might appreciate crop mode. Smaller files to transfer across. While having the full FX mode for times when you want massive images. No need to go cropping on the machine. It's done and dusted. Plus for framing in camera.

Not for me thanx... Above f/8, diffraction on a 46Mp sensor is going to be a huge problem!

more like f/5.6 I'm guessing, that's why they need to change Bayer design to something that doesn't need interpolation and hence no AA (foveon like?)
