I have just received a message from Flickr about a magazine in America wanting to use one of my pictures, do an interview and pay me $500!!

Here is the contact made - I would really welcome ideas - Is this a load of old rubbish to get my pic for nothing? They want a high res image now - Does this sound right? Would really welcome some advice here. I know that some people have sold stuff through Flickr before.

Popular Photography Magazine

Greetings from Popular Photography Magazine. We came across your website and love your work! We are interested in using your daisy flower lens baby photo for our column You Can Do It. It would be a two page spread and include and interview with you on how you made the photo and what equipment and software you used. We can pay you $500 for the use of the photo and the interview and you will need to sign a contract and W9 form. We'd really love to work with you. Please let me know if you are interested and the next step will be sending us the high resolution photo and then I will have the editor of the story contact you for the interview. Thank you.

Sounds dodgy to me, next step will be sending the high res photo ??? Insist money is sent first to play it safe

Hi Sara,

It's perfectly legit... I've dealt with Linzee before and had a few hundred dollars out of her. :)

They did a high ISO feature a couple of years ago and used one of my shots for it. Popular Photography magazine is owned by Hachette Media and they're huge... they sell magazines over here too!

The only problem is getting the cheque cashed. I used a company up in Lancashire that I'd found on the tinterweb but I can't remember the name of 'em for the life of me. If I remember correctly, they use a bank called 'Chase Manhattan'.

Go for it... it's money for nothing. :)
Best wishes,
Si

On hearing some first hand experience, I would go for it!

Definitely cash first, or give it to them at teh interview and get paid at the same time.
They shouldn't have a problem with that as they say they will be printing it with the interview report.. If not then it's a scam

What rubbish! A quick check through Google and you can see that it's a bona fide publication, one of many published by the parent organisation named in the email string.

To the OP, of course you want to see the contract to know what licensing terms they want, but FFS, they are offering $500 for a shot you put on Flickr! Bite their hands off!

You know, if it were me, I would take the chance and send it. It does sound a bit dodgy but, on the other hand, were you going to be able to make alternative money out of the photo? It would be reasonable for them to have a high res copy of the photo to conifrm that it would work okay in the mag. Also, if you are worried, drop the photo into Photoshop or something like that and put a watermark on it - then send them a high res watermarked version. Personally, I would take the chance and send them the photo and see where it goes as my ego would want the article! All their reference points seem to check out okay. To be a scam they would have had to put quite some work in just to get some photos.

Spiritflier seems to know who this person is so thats a good start, why don't you ring on the number provided and have an actual talk with the person.

Sara,
I'd say go for it - Might be the way I read it, but the High Res Image comes after signing the W9 form and Contract. Nothing ventured and all that, particularly with Si's first hand experience as well.

It is a cracking image as well so can see why they're interested.

Why is there a problem cashing the cheque from this company ???

Cheers folks. That's great first hand experience Si, thank you. I will contact them and take it from there I guess. Looking on the internet, it seems that major banks and Building Societies will cash dollar cheques.

It's a good job I don't delete my flickrmail! :D

Here's the message I had from Linzee back in April 2008...

Dear Photographer,

Here at Popular Photography Magazine we are working on a story about the new low light photography with DSLR's and all the new capabilities with the cameras. We came across your photo "High ISO is not a no-no!" and would possibly like to use it for our story. It would be a payment of $*** if we use the photo and we need a high resolution image if you are willing the participate. Please email me back at lkarasik@hfmus.com or call ***-***-****. Thanks.

Linzee Karasik

It took a while for the cheque to come through but it did arrive. :)

And most banks will cash US cheques - but will charge you a fee. It used to be about a fiver at Nationwide when I used to cash my shareware cheques - but that was a few years ago.

Hi Sara,
Most banks will cash USD cheques but they charge you a fortune for the privilege... I'd have ended up losing nearly half the value of mine if I'd stuck it straight in my bank account. I think I did a 'yahoo answers' thing in the end.

You've got an interview out of your picture as well so make the most of it and when you email Linzee, ask her to make sure they post you a copy of the issue you'll be in or at least point you in the direction of somewhere in the UK that sells it.

Hope that helps,
Si

Ask her to do a wire transfer instead of a cheque, you'll lose maximum £12 that way

I get paid from canada every month with a wire and £12 is what is costs me. You'll need to provide them with your bank swift and iban numbers, both of which may be on your statement, i've with barclays and they are on mine

Halifax/HBOS charge £5 to cash a cheque drawn on a US bank. I know because I cashed one last week.:)

Ask them to do the transfer (or cheque) in GBP. That's what I do working for American companies.

I'm trying to find out anywhere in UK that stocks the mag, so that I can have a look at the type of interviews they carry - Anyone any idea where I could get a copy from? Doesn't look like Whsmiths stocks it - Other ideas?

I would have said Borders, but they're gone now.

Some larger chains of Waterstones might. WH Smiths are actually sh!t for magazines.

In my experience ,most magazines won't pay you up front for anything! You write your article (or send your image) and get paid after publication. If you start asking for money immediately, they might change their mind and find another photo. It's great that they've chosen yours!

Pop Photo are one of the oldest and I would say most respected magazines in the world. It used to be stocked by WH Smith's until the recession in the 80's. I used to buy it for their test's on equipment and lenses. I can't remember if it was them or Modern Photography who used to completely strip a camera down to test it. There is a PDF version available as well.

Sara, ask them to send you a PDF copy of the magazine, so that you can see how your work will fit in.

Sara,

Send me your address by PM, I might have a couple of copies lying around. Just to confirm what others have said, they are a legit magazine and probably the largest one in the States.

Colin.

I'd simply say Wel done and go for it, nothing to loose really and looking at all the replies in this thread AND first hand experience...defo something to gain.

You could always call Linzee and ask more info about it? If you go for it, hope we get to see it published :)

Cheers folks.

Here's the pic by the way - Lensbaby - You either love 'em or hate 'em!!

Well done!

Popular Photography is absolutely legit, and so is parent company Hachette - they are huge, publish Elle in the UK, plus loads of other womens mags and hundreds of magazines internationally.

Pop Photo is the biggest selling photo magazine in America, probably in the world. I think they peaked at getting on for 1m sales a month when the market was at an all time high in the 90s, after they bought out and merged with Modern Photography. Nobody else would pay that much for what amounts to a relatively small feature.

Massive kudos to you!

Edit: lovely pic too :)

Nice shot and being bright and bouncing off the page fits in with
PopPhoto's style.

I take it that you will have already looked at their website?

Some decent lens tests are available online from their site.

Looked at their site as well as the 'You can do it' section, as this is the area the pic will go into - Just need to think what to write for an interview. Still pinching myself if I'm honest :D

Some decent stuff in the "You can do it section" and I think they
rotate it quite often, so it doesn't get stale.

They have an article in the "You can do it section" Inkjet Printing Lessons by Joel Meyerowitz link
so your in with some good company :D
