Really not sure how it happened but my 500D got what I initially thought was dust on the glass in front of the sensor. However when I looked in to clean it, it looked more like a scratch so I paid for it to be cleaned. They agreed to clean but at payment said the glass was scratched as I had already suspected. Seems sand got in :(

It now leaves me with upgrade decisions.
I have. Sigma 17-70 2.8 lens
Canon 50mm 1.8
Sigma 10-20mm

The obvious is to get a cheap 600d body but I don't like that flip screen at all. The 60d is a mid way house but I'm not sure it's worth the extra?

A 6D is on offer at the moment and means a jump to full frame but I'm not sure it's justified. Plus I believe the 10-20mm is only APS-C compatible?

What suggestions do people have?
 
Your Sigma 17-70 would also not be compatible with full frame.

If you don't like the flip out screen on the 600D, you could always consider a 550D (MPB had a number of them last time I looked) or a 100D (Canon outlet on eBay were selling them for £279 recently and get stock quite regularly).
 
What do you dislike about the flip screen? I have a 650D and don't find the flip screen obtrusive at all, it spends most of it's life flat against the body. The touchscreen however IS very useful.

I have one on one of my cameras and now I think that any camera without one is grossly inferior. They're fantastic IMVHO but if you don't like them (and I can't think why you wouldn't like them) you can always just leave it in place and never flip it or even better turn it to the body.

What's not to like?

You do know the 60D has a flip screen as well...

What don't you like about the flip screen - a good friend has the 60D and really likes the flip screen, also allows him to turn it round so the LCD is protected when he packs it away.

With regards to what to buy - what is your budget and what would you like the new body to do over your 500D ?

Size as well - the xxD range tend to be larger bodies than the xxxD range - this may / may not be a helpful deciding factor for you...
 
Didn't realise that the 60D had a flip screen as well. I've been checking specs not necessarily pics. Size isn't an issue in terms of holding but don't want too much additional weight.

A better AF system over the 500D with multiple AF spots would be good and some tuneable. Better low light shooting with better noise reduction.

On board flash is something I can live without but I didn't get to the point of figuring out if one is mountable on the 6D.

Improvement in overall image quality (depth of light on sensor, and not just megapixels) could be a deciding factor BUT I don't know if price justifies the selling of one lens to go full frame.

Budget wise the full frame may have to be on loan. The others would just be bought.

What's the 5Dii going to compare to the 600D? Or even the 60D
 
The Canon 60d is a great camera! I'm only slightly biased Haha!

The flip screen is actually more use than you would think, but if you really dislike them then maybe look at the 7d? It is still APS-C but is quite an upgrade from your current body.

Oh, see if you can get somewhere to handle the cameras! I looked at the 7d as well, but it was too heavy for me to enjoy using at the time.

I think it is more about the expectation of robustness that a pro body must have. Flip out screens would add an extra level of complexity to getting this and the associated weather proofing right.

I suspect that's also a factor, But I think most bodies (consumer and pro) can take far more abuse than most owners would ever dare put them through!

As much as I would love a flip screen on some occasions, it would likely get broken unless they make it very robustly. I am probably more willing to see LV streaming to my smartphone or tablet with even more flexibility (we are nearly there actually)

How / where do you change your lenses and do you keep it all clean? I hope it is not done facing the wind for a start, and you don't leave it open... It sounds obvious yet I see it so many times. It could be also botched sensor cleaning job or one of the lenses is crumbling from inside. I wouldn't be that surprised with the old sigma designs :lol: (not to be confused with their Art primes)
 
If you'd rather stick with crop (and want good AF without a flip out screen) then I'd suggest a used 7D. They're going for very good prices these days, just check around here and on wex/mpb for very good examples.

Personally there have been more than a few occassions where I'd have really liked my 7d or 5d2 to have had a flip out screen.

Never changed against the wind and if possible not changed outdoors at all. Always changed lens with body facing down to avoid anything getting in. Also doubt it's the lens crumbling! Only 2yr old. Whatever it was on the lens was there prior to cleaning as I looked after taking some f22 shots to show how much dust was in.

And 7D it is. Bought and now enjoying. Definitely different but decided on crop to save on lenses.
 
7D Auto focus was better than on the used 650d. ISO expansion isn't great but really not sure about the noise levels they introduce.

Prices on the 6D and need for new wife angle lens put me off (for now).

I like the easy ability to flip between zonal focus and the large quantity of AF points and exposure and refocus without the usual amount of messing too. Some bits need a bit of brushing up in but hopefully this will last me a good old while.

Are you completely cack handed? I doubt it.

Anyone can drop a camera and smash something but personally I doubt that flippy screens cause significantly increased risk of damage if the user is only normally careful and in fact I think that fully articulated screens are fantastic and reduce the likelihood of damage to the rear screen simply because you can flip the screen to the body. I've used my G1 (flippy screen equipped) for years now in all conditions and the screen remains pristine as whenever it isn't being used it's turned to the body.
