Yes
YES, another upgrade question :D

Just selling my 50D and was wondering if I'm doing the right thing going to the 7D.

I take shots of everything apart for feathered birds. Motorsport, football, some weddings, family etc etc.

I dont think the video would get used much if at all.

Is there enough of a difference to justify forking out 5/600 onto of the money from the 50D sale?

I did the same upgrade and if I am honest, wouldn't do it again. That is not to say that the 7D isn't a great camera, but the 50D did everything I needed.

What is it that you think you need on the 7D? My video button has never been switched on! What did I gain from doing the swap? ...................... Absolutely nothing. In fact, in the short term I feel I have lost far more. Perhaps when I have the time to learn about the 7D properly I will welcome the choice I made.

Do you ever shoot at high iso's, did you notice a difference in the 2 cameras doing this?

I don't particulary use high iso's. I was always happy to shoot at 800 with the 50D. With the 7D I was finding it noisy at 400. Not impressed I can tell you!

Cheers Swag, I just need someone to buy my 100 macro and I'll go to the 5D instead methinks.

Blimey :eek: Don't let me put you off!! There are some on here getting some stonking images with the 7D

:lol: to be honest, there is a thread about the issues getting decent sharp images out of the 7D and that was putting me off as well.

I had a 8 month painful relationship with my 50D and i just didn't like the images it produced at low ISO's, i looked at the 7D read the reviews and looked at the images posted on TP and decided a 7D would just inflict more pain upon me.....so decided to spend the extra and get a 5D MK2........ I've only had it a few days but the images are stunning.......portratits leap of the page at you and appear to have a 3D effect. Macros at 100 ISO and f16 are totally noise free with good solid dark shadows without any blotches. The only thing is if you use long focal lengths a lot of the time you will miss the 1.6 crop factor of the 50D/7D - Oh the reason the it doesn't come with a flash built in is it doesn't need it - thats what the iso's dial for :D

Long focal lengths are not an issue with me really. What lens do you use on the 5D MK2? The only one I would have a first would be a 28-135 IS USM one, and possibly a 50mm.

I love macro so i use the MP-E65 and 100mm Canon macros - I've also got the 85mm f1.8 (which is totally excellent on this body) and a 50mm f1.4 again total different beast on this body,I've also got the canon 70-300mm IS usm for long stuff which i don't do very often. Next on the list is a 24-70mm and then something longer.

I am happy with it but took a while to get use to it. and had to wait for a good edit prog

Main prog at the moment is lightroom 2.6 but it still does not seem to handle the files that well. but I have a feeling I would not get shots like these if I had stook with the 40 (or at least so many).

and a crop

there was this thread on editing

LINKY

and then theres this one

Linky

and for a good watch there is the videos on the B&H site to watch. I have yet to see any noise on my pics from the 7D at low ISO. But do like the high iso handeling. this was shot in the shade.

Exif Sub IFD

* Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/200 second ===> 0.005 second
* Lens F-Number / F-Stop = 8/1 ===> ƒ/8
* Exposure Program = aperture priority (3)
* ISO Speed Ratings = 2000

Raymond,

Genuinely not trying to be picky here but I'd be interested to know what aspect of the bike shot you think would have been a challenge for a 40D but not for the 7D ?

Bob

I moved from 40D to 7D because I needed to get indoor Show Jumping at High ISO (3200). Coupled with the 50mm 1.4 I get good enough results. If I could afford to Change to a D3 I would have. But for the Show Jumping I'd have stuck with the 40D. I've since aquired a 5D MK 1 as well. Great for my general photography. In your shoes I'd go for the 5D MK 2

I'd jump at the 5DMk2, but until someone shells out for my 100mm macro I'm stumped.

Even then the 28-135 IS USM would'nt do the 5d much credit would it?

None by camera all user error (?). I have a tendancy to machine gun my shots in short burst. I douht I would have got that bike shot if it was not for the speed of the focus system on the 7d. but that is my thoughts. I have as said found I am tending to get more keepers (usable) shots with the 7D. I have found also with the 7D I am starting to cut out the machine gunning to try and get a good shot. weather its down to the cameras AF system or my technique changeing due to the way the camera feels i do not know. Does that help bob?

Sorry. Is 28-135 an EF-S. I didn't realise. Only trying to help. BTW...I love my 7D as well you know.

The 5D mk1 is an absolutely fantastic camera you would be over the moon with one.

Thanks Raymond. The shot didn't look like anything that would tax the AF too much but I hadn't considered it may be part of a burst and that's something that the 7D would have the edge over the 40D.

Bob

Thanks for all the advice guys. In the end I've just been offered a 5D at a good price, so I've taken that. If FF isnt for me I'll sell it and get the 7D :)
