Hi, Now I am thinking of stepping up from my 40D to either the 50D or the 60D, now I have extra batteries that will work with the 50D but not 60D I have CF cards that will not work with the 60D also a Canon battery grip that I believe will work with the 50D but not the 60D so the question is do I stick with the 40D or is a step up to the 50D worth it or should I go for the 60D
Looking on good old Ebay there does not seem to be such a wide gap in price on the 50 or 60D so the money side is not really an important factor.
Thanks for any thoughts.

What are you finding that the 40D doesn't do that the 50D or 60D will do?

This, it sounds to me like your upgrading for the sake of it. Unless there is a feature available on either of those cameras that is not on your current one that you will actually use then upgrading will just be a waste of money. The difference bettween the 40D and the 50D and pretty minor, the 60D has been positioned differently in the market so the differences are more pronounced some good some not so and some debatable!

Hi, Well to be honest the 18 MP vs 10.1 MP was the first consideration 40 to 60D and the second was Slightly better image quality 66.0 vs 64.0 but Alex is probably nearer the mark, maybe should wait and see what Canon have for there next suprise.
Thanks for the replies.

Don't get too worried about MP. You can print as big as you like from only 6 MP. What practical real-world situations have you found where 10 MP isn't enough?

Most people here will agree that, most of the time, upgrading your lenses is a better investment than upgrading your body.

As someone who went 40D to 50D I can say it did exactly b****r all for my photography.

I should have held out at the time instead of buying - and unless you are likely to use the HD video or swivel screen on the 60D I can't see it giving any more over the 40D to be honest.

If you are lucky, better noise handling at equivalent viewing sizes from the 50D/60D

When I was considering my recent upgrade I was between the 40D and 50D because bothe are very similar in terms of functionality.
It was always going to boil down to a good deal and that deal secured me a 50D with just over 4000 clicks.

My upgrade was a large jump up from my old 1000D. I had exceeded the limitation of the 1000D hence the upgrade beckoned, but it was also a justifiable one as it gave me room to manouvere with my skills.

Going from a 40D to a 50D will not give much leverage in terms of functionality and outright better photographs.

As everyone else has said, megapixels count for very little in digital photography.
Its the glass in front of the camera and the way you use the whole package that counts for more.

The improvements over the 40D would be:

Micro focus adjustment (nb - this is not on the 60D or the 40D)
Larger ISO range (up to ISO 12800)
Better noise handling + 4 levels of noise reduction as opposed to on or off
Auto lighting optimiser icon now in VF + 4 levels of ALO as opposed to on or off
Interchangeable focus screens
Peripheral illumination control
Contrast detect AF in live view
Face detect AF in live view
Digic 4 processor as opposed to the old digic 111
HDMI out
3 inch LCD with 4 times the resolution of the 40D screen ( 40D = 230,000 px - 50D = 920,000 px)
3 different sizes of raw file (Full res, 7.1MP and 3.8MP)
Increase in sensor resolution, only really handy if your cropping images

The downsides:
Slight reduction in frame rate (0.2fps reduction)
Loss of 1 custom mode (40D =3, 50D = 2)

There's enough there to interest me personally, and the downsides aren't that bad.
Oddly the only thing that attracts me to a 60D is the rear screen, I would be put off by the lack of micro focus adjustment as well.

Strangely enough reading all of those differences its only the first two that would be of interest.

Just goes to show what's important to one person is of little consequence to another

Keeping my powder dry for something that would really sway me, but haven't seen it yet

I would easily go for the 60D for the higher MP (cropping for birding), MUCH BETTER higher ISO (as sood as the 7D) and the flip screen for macros. Also the micro adjustment is very helpful for some lenses (especially fast 1.4 or 1.2 ones)

Yes, just check, that is odd indeed ...
I can see a firmware update adding it when the prices go down enough for them not to worry that it is a competitor to the 7D...

Not so sure they will, think that and the improved AF will be seen as the main reason to buy the 7D, does it for me

Another odd thing is why the inbuilt level only works horizontally, that's just plain daft to me
