Hi.

If I use a nifty fifty on a x3 teleconverter, what will happen? Am I right in thinking it will become a 150mm 3 stop slower ? I.e. 1.8 becomes 3.5 / 4.6 ?????

Will there be any noticeable difference in sharpness?

Cheers.

Anth.

Before I got myself a 100 2.8 lens I did something similar albeit I was just mucking about.

I put a Kenko 2X Teleplus MC7 AF onto a Canon 50mm f1.8 which = 100mm f4

50mm f/1.8 x3= 150mm f/5.4

Will there be any noticeable difference in sharpness? Almost certainly, quite a lot. A 3x TC isn't going to shine optically even with a pro lens - there's a reason the camera manufacturers don't make 3x TCs. And that's a budget lens which isn't intended to be used with a TC. It should work, but it might not be pretty.

If you do try it, remember to report back! It's an unusual combo and there's unlikely to be much info available about how well it performs.

From memory, I had a Kenko x3TC which I tried with a range of lenses. One thing to bear in mind is that the rear element of a 50mm lens might not allow access for the TC. Another point is that I could not get any lens to AF with this onboard even when it went to less than f5.6. These TCs are fairly unuseable IMVHO.

I've seen people do this with a TC and small lens. Should make it useful for macro too. Not sure how sharp it'll be though
