Hi

I've read the manual on this one (honest:p)..and some other websites but I just am trying to understand if these can be fired in manual mode using a 580exII master.

I will have one on camera (the master) and one or two additional 580exII slaves. If I dont want to use ETTL and set ratio's, can these be fired in a manual mode triggered by the 580 master?

I think I've got the slave into a manual mode but can't test it as I only have the one flash at the mo..

if it's the same as the 430exII hold the 'zoom' to activate slave then hold 'mode' to switch between ettl and manual.

I use the st-e2 as my trigger and 430ex's as slaves and thats how I muck around with manual power :) sorry if it's completely wrong.

E-TTL is the whole system, and there are various mode options within it, including manual, ie there is manual manual, and E-TTL manual.

You need to be in E-TTL for remote shooting, but set the master to manual within the options and the slaves will follow. You'll get the hang of it when you have another gun to try for real.

Thanks for the replies chaps!!

I did get it in 'M' using the Zoom and Mode method mentioned. I had the flashing letter M on the display and flashing LED on the front, but as I said wasn't sure exactly what was going on:lol:

I am possibly gonna get another two, but wanted to know if I would have full manual operation using just 3 units and not supplement them with RF602's. I'll no doubt get manual radio triggers in the future:thumbs:

cheers

If there is no specific reason to buy two 580's you would be better with three 430's for the same dosh.

Cheers Jim,

Yeah I am trying to justify my flash setup ;-)

3 580s, or a mix with 430s or third party and radio triggers. Possibly gonna wait on the rf603s and see what reviews they get before buying rf602s.

Thanks

Agree on the 430 being better value than the 580 - the main thing you're paying for is the master control functions, which you've already got, and 2/3rds of a stop more power. Apart from that, relatively detail differences for a lot more money.

TBH I wouldn't hesitate with the RF-602s. The RF-603 doesn't seem to do anything extra that's very useful in functional terms, to me at least, and the RF-602 certainly do the job. Main thing is though, they're so cheap where's the worry?

You are aware that the RF-602 (and all the other cheaper radio triggers) are strictly manual only? No E-TTL compatability.

Hi Richard,

I'm just a little slightly concerned that one EX580 master failure would render ETTL unavailable. I also had to make the call when buying the initial flash of what to choose between, and after many nights chewing it over...I went for the 580. I have to say I am quite impressed with the unit, however haven't held a 430 to compare functions and interface and don't dispute the views on the 430 being better value!!

I guess my 'preference' if you like on the rf603s is simply using AAA batteries - no other reason to be honest. Im not sure if thats a sensible preference to have, I just have loads of rechargables aa/aaa.

Yeah..I understand I'll lose ETTL with these. I actually want to learn manual flash hence the original post, and then slip into ETTL if I'm happy with the results it can deliver.

Thanks again everyone for your help....any further advice appreciated
