Hi everyone,

I've finally saved enough money to upgrade.

I shoot everything including studio, portraits, landscapes and sports.

I've read the reviews and still dont know what to get :)

I understand the 7D is better for sports but the 5D mk2 for the others, is that right?

What would you get?

If I get the 7D from Kerso I could also get the 70-200 f4 IS.

Am I better going FF or staying with a crop sensor and getting better lens? The camera needs to last me probably at least 12 months before I can upgrade again.

My other lens at the moment are the EF 28-135mm USM IS. If I got the 5D I could also get the 50MM f1.4 at the same time.

argh my head hurts now!

Abt the sports thing. What the 5D loses on is really it's slower continuous shooting rate, so it doesn't actually lose on sports. It depends on how you shoot sports. If you don't use burst then it doesn't really matter. Then there's AF, I think the 7D probably has the edge on this but the difference would not be tht great I believe.
 
a 350D, lens will be upgraded throughout the year, I just want the mahor purchase done first.

The 7D 'might' be an advantage with the higher continuous fps, but I don't generally fire mine off at full rate (I've a 40D), but where the 7D would be a help is the 1.6 crop factor over the f5D - esp for motorsports and footie :thumbs:
 
Does it have to be current release kit?

I ask as, for a mix you might find you could get last generation bodies (which are still fantastic bits of kit) and better glass.

I had thought of that, but I want a warranty with the body.
 
The 28-135 would be OK on a 5D/5D2 - I had one on my 5D and it was a good all rounder. Colours are not quite as rich as the 24-105 but it is lighter, and still very good.

Here's something to think about - I have a 5D2, and recently bought a 70-200 F4L IS, and it still autofocuses very fast on the 5D2 body with 2x Teleconvertors stacked (Canon 1.4x II, and Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 DG). I didn't expect it to retain AF at all. So I've got a lightweight 70-200 zoom with amazing IQ, with the option to turn it into either 280mm F5.6 or 392mm F8 at the long end. Ok that would need a fair bit of light....but with the awesome high ISO handling of the 5D2, you can crank up the ISO to maintain shutter speed. And the DOF at F8 at just under 400mm on a full frame body is probably the same DOF as F5.6 on a crop at the same effective focal length - so you still get great subject isolation.

You might think it would be soft with both convertors attached - it isn't. I had a 100-400 before this and there is virtually no difference at 400mm. The 70-200 is that good wide open to start with that it can carry it off nicely.

For your needs, I would say go for the 5D2 and save up for a 70-200. Your 28-135 is the perfect walkaround lens for it, as I've mentioned. If you need more reach, get the 1.4x Teleconvertors (Canon if you only need 1, then Kenko if you need 2).

If you buy your 5D2 from Jacobs, you'll get a 2 year warranty on the body as well.

Thanks Dave, How do you find the 50mm f1.8 on the 5Dmk2? I'm also looking at getting a 50mm either the 1.8 or the 1.4.

if its mainly motorsport and footie like you say then i'd go for the 7d. the crop factor will be more useful and so will the fast frame-rate
 
i had the same dilemma and have decided on the 5DMKII for the FF as i am tired of loosing too much in the frame with a 24-70, i love landscapes and portraits but still like to shoot the old Wildlife picture.
Look back at your last 100 photos and see what they were of and if you find over 40% are not sports then think about the 5D.

It's great - much better than on a crop body (had 40D before my 5D) as it seems to nail the focussing better - especially in reasonable to good light.

I might be selling it though - not sure yet - as I've bought the 85mm 1.8 recently. If so I'll let you know & advertise it on here accordingly.
 
Kinda in the same boat.

50% of my shots will be fast moving stuff ie cars on tracks - But i love a good land/sea scape.

Im almost certain come pay day i'll go with the 7D and get a good wide angle lens.

If the 5D II & 7D were closer in price it would make things a whole lot more difficult though.
 
Ultimately it is the 5D MkII which can take the better pictures. However the 7D is not far behind and it does have a few key benifits over thr 5D.

*Faster FPS
*Better handling of HD Video with more resolution choices
*1.6 crop factor allows for cheaper telephoto lenses.
*17-55mm F/2.8 IS:)
*Built in off-camera flash triggering.

3 months ago I was deliberating on the same choice. In the end I demo'd the 7D with an EF-S 17-55 F/2.8 IS lens and decided FF wouldn't be much bettert. My current kit is as follows.
Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8
Sigma 30mm F/1.4
EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS
EF 70-200mm F/4 IS

I do not really miss anything FF can offer, except maybe the extra stop of High ISO ability. Some of my favorite lenses would be unusable on FF, and would cost much more to replace with equivelent items.

Both are great cameras.
 
Ok I know I'm still a bit of an amateur, but how about a 1.3 crop 1D? Then you have a compromise between FF and crop- so for motorsports you would still get some telephoto benefit, yet you still have a bigger sensor for landscapes etc- admittedly I don't know about prices new and used- just interested by the obvious answers I will get thrown back to me very shortly!!!
 
I think I have just become very biased towards the 5D2. Got it today witha 24-70 f/2.8 and I have to say I am blown away with the IQ. It was a real pick up, have a quick play with the menus to get the settings you like and the pics were a dream.

I never had that with my 7D. Perhaps because it was foo-barred from the off and Canon have a new replacement in the post. I don't know, but I am definately getting a far better vibe from the 5D2 than I ever got with the 7D.

I hope that will change and I will love them both equally!!
 
I was in a similar position very recently, though I wasn't considering the 7D as I have no intention of selling my 40D, which I intend to use for the motorsport/fast moving type photography.

During my decision making process, the only thing that was concerning me about the 5d MkII was the reports on how poor the AF system was. In the end I reconciled myself to thinking that I used to manage with cameras that didn't have any sort of AF system, and if I could get half reasonable shots with those, then anything above and beyond no AF system at all was a bonus.

p.s. And the 50 1.8 works very well on the 5D.
 
I've the 7D for pets and action shots like cars at the Nurburgring this coming summer but for everything else I use the 5d mkII.

When buying lenses I get them for the 5D then I also have the advantage of using the 7D to change to focal values of each.

35L is my 50 (actually 58mm for the 7D) and so on.

I know people rave about the 7D's focusing system but I've never had an issue with the 5D

You could alway sell the 350D on ebay, grab a used 40D and a new 5D MkII from HDEW....I mention them because I got my 7D from there with a nice 3 year warranty card.
 
I suspect that either of them would impress you no matter which you bought. I'm in exactly the same position but saving a bit more so I can get more lenses/accesories at once so it'll feel like a big christmas for me (childish I know =P) and also I stand a chance of getting some discounts. I'm currently leaning towards the 7D as it wont restrict me to only EF lenses as there are still a couple of EF-S gems that I wouldn't want to have to discount without having tried them.

Good luck whatever you decide. I'm sure you'll see a massive improvement over your current gear.

For me it was all about the reach. I changed my 1DSII to the 7D to use the extra reach of the crop sensor for wildlife photography.
I must say that I do not regret it.
 
I sold my 5d and bought a 7d, Im still not sure if it was the right move. I really do miss the IQ and FF. I still havent used my 7d in anger yet so will reserve judgment.

(but if DuncanF is reading this can I have my 5d back:lol:)
 
Personally, i would suggest a second hand original 5D and then either a 50D or even a second hand 40D, that way you get the best of both worlds :)
 
One of my photobuddies is in the same situation; currently a 40D user and already has good glass.
She's planning to take wildlife and landscapes in bad weather (nice part of the world but very cold with appalling weather).
I recommended the 7D primarily for the weather sealing and extra reach.

But she read the side by side comparisons and there is something about the 5DII image texture and quality that makes them go zing.
So she is going for a 5DII purely based on IQ; she's going to also get some sort of weatherproofing.
 
I think the next take on the 7D will be one hell of a camera not sure the 7D we have now is quiet there yet?
