Yes
I'm looking to upgrade from a Canon 40d to full frame, and the natural progression would be the 5Dmkii....
BUT....5Dmkii v D700

5Dmkii + points
Resolution &
Video
(neither high on my priorities)

D700 + points
Sturdier build & weatherproofing
Pop up flash for emergency fill, and for CLS off camera flash
Infinitely better AF
Auto ISO in manual with user defined parameters (big plus!!)
Free grip

Give me some more reasons to get the Canon!
:help:

go have a try with both, see which you like the feel of more - end of the day they are both great cameras and can both produce fantastic images. depends what you need them for also of course.

you already have Canon lenses? (although granted they might be only EF-S, but if not then that already saves you a bundle!)

have you factored into this the lens? You say that you have a 40D, so if you changed to a nikon you would need to replace your lens as well. Is this doable for you?

The lens issue won't be a deciding factor.
With prices having risen over the last year i can recoup what i paid for most of them. And even make money on others!

Nope :)

Just changed from Canon to Nikon and I can't argue with your logic.

(It does apparently upset 5DII owners when I say that the D700 is awesome)

Have you many EF lenses you can carry forward?

If so then the Canon has more in its favour.
If not then try and spend some time with each before making a choice.

I love my 5Dmk2 to bits. I sometimes wonder what the D700 is like but not enough to do anything rash.

Admittedly I don't shoot sports or wildlife but I've never had a problem with the AF on the Canon. It doesn't do miracles but it works. Complex AF would be lost on me.

In this case lenses don't matter as EF-S mount lenses won't fit on the 5d, if you like the feel of the Canon go with it, if you like the layout of the Nikon go Nikon. The camera is a tool, it's not going to make you a better photographer overnight, but having to think about the layout will cause you to miss shots and you'll start to regret the purchase.

Soon get used to it Brian :) I just set it up that way I wanted it as a default and shot everything manually until I got to grips with it. Now it's starting to become more intuitive.

One thing I'm really liking though is that most things on the Nikon can be set or changed on the camera body rather than buried in menus. So even having to engage my feeble brain, it's quicker to change most things ;)

Nah, I tried a Nikon for a bit and didn't like it at all, even though I wanted to.

I can change pretty much every setting with the camera at my eye in a dark club...... If canon could just add an AF like the nikon's or a stripped down 1 series it'd be a storming success.

I'M UPSET!! :'(

oh and off the record, If I had to buy everything again, I would go Nikon and get a D700 if not a D3

Hmmmm...so no real reasons to stick with Canon then! b****r...haha

My post was tonuge in cheek. 5D 11 is a lovely camera and I'm very pleased with it. D700 may be (or not) a better camera, but that Can v Nik issue will always be there. ;)

Is the build quality of the D700 really that much better than the 5DmkII?

EDIT: I guess I'll never know.... ;)
